17hmr remington 17 grain

All made in same factory!!

I thought that but remms cycle better than horns in mine.

I rang CCI in USA couple of weeks ago re the 'plastic' in the ballastic tips.

Was told they supply the bullets for quite a few ammo manufacturers.

There is no difference in the plastic or the bullets supplied.

The only thing they couldnt comment on was the powder types each brand uses.

what hmr is it anschutz is a pig for missfires if you just touch the bolt from completley down.

In defence of the Anschutz, it is quite easy to accidentally knock the bolt upwards very slightly so that when you pull the trigger it does not fire - the firing pin is not let go by the trigger.

Raising and lowering the bolt, while keeping it pushed forward, re-sets the firing pin (does not eject the round) and it fires as normal. It is as much a shooter familiarity problem as anything, a "feature" (smile).

Better for it not to go bang than go bang with the bolt not perfectly home. Irritating never the less.

The failure to fire in that instance has nothing to do with the bullet.

The rather loud "click" when you raise and lower the bolt is the only criticism I have of the Anschutz. It can be loud enough on a quiet still night to spook the rabbits and almost impossible to muffle. (I still love my annie).

The missfire experienced with the Remington ammo is a complete failure to fire even though the bullet has been struck and the rim dented. Maybe it was not struck hard enough or in quite the right place, most likely the primer is not properly spun into the rim. The manufacturing process is really quite amazingly sophisticated so why Remington in particular? Maybe it is just a variation of certain guns prefer certain ammo. I found that by removing and re-seating the bullet it would fire second time round. Winchester ammo has been reported as failing to fire in the same way.

Another type of missfire would be an inadequate or partial detonation and sometimes the "bang" just sounds odd or different to normal, maybe coinciding with a flier, all a bit spooky and even after firing dozens of round through a chronometer it is still a bit unclear. I even tried weighing them but a waste of time.

I too use Hornady in the Anschutz and having tried most makes found it to be the most reliable and gave the tightest and most consistent groups (for me in my gun). The different brands may look the same (apart from tip colour and embossed stamp) but they do differ in bullet cross section and powder formula.

I have not had any "failure to fire" using Hornady.

Correspondence with the factory confirmed to me that the tip colour of the Hornady ammunition is meaningless. The shade of red is variable depending on density of colourant and injection mould temperature (darker means mould too hot) and once they used blue because there was a surplus of that blue colour plastic which was "made for the FN 5.7x28 round", it was as simple as that. I seem to remember that blue were sold cheaper at the time, a marketing decision, nothing to do with ballistic characteristics.

They also told me that the first letter in the lot number of the ammo is the month and the second letter the year. So "H17R30 was made in August 2010" - ok so H = 8th letter = August but I fail to see how 1 = 2010. Apparently L07Q05 is December 2009. The rest of the number indicates which machine it was produced on but they would not be more specific.

It does seem as though there are ballistic differences between lot numbers of the same make/type of bullet. So if you are fussy, just buy 1 box of a lot and see if you supplier will hold the rest of that batch while you check it out. If it performs well buy loads of the stuff.
