snoopdog 1,256
get yourself to college and find a shoot so you can go beating you have to get to no people ..show them how keen you are ask hte game keeper if he needs any help .you will have to be a skivvy for a bit and work for nothing if the keeper says he needs some help and and tells you to be at his house at 6 oclock in the morning ....be there there at 5.30...you have to show willing and most of all be keen and listen...if you dont no of any shoots find out..go and knock on the keepers door and ask him i you can go beating or give him a hand tell him you will work for nothing ....and if you ever end up keepering ..just let me no where.. ..good look if you are willing you will get what you want you might get a few knock backs but sombody will take you on... dickyboy 1
i am an ex sparsholt lad!! started gamekeeping 3 years to the day! Finished my course last june and to back up and add to what snoopdog said, Yes get work experience and go to college, sparsholt is best! I worked for 6months full time 8-10 hour days voluntarily, then while at college i spent my allowance on full to drive home and work- voluntarily!! every friday i worked for free, didn't even get lamping permission, never even asked!! then did my 10 week work experience on the estate asked to be paid if i did the full 19week summer holiday, after several letters to the land agent i got £40 a week, some days were 6.30am - 10 pm---Piss poor wage while at college theres loads of work but get on with it or the whole 2 years is a waste of time!! as my two mates found out when they had 15 odd assignments to do in 1 week i did some every night!....i remember well cos i'd already done mine and it was lovely weather so i was outside having a smoke with the girls while they were scribbling away!! hahaha Then cos of the work and the contacts i had built up i had proved myself to this community and there was a potential job oppurtunity....so i did one day voluntary work with a pest controller and one day with the keeper! During this time i lived on £20 a week and fuel food and beer had to be paid with that!! But I was one of very few people that walked straight out into a job... today was given a £2000 pay rise and only do the lamping on the estate i helped on!! I have sole permission on that estate!! F***ing paid off!!!! One mate is doing the college course again, one is working in a factory and one has no job lost his licence and has fuct his life up!! It wasn't easy but was fun....have two real good friends into gamekeeping etc where you from mate? if theres anything you want to know or i missed(unlikely in that lot lol) then PM me?!?! Guest Ditch_Shitter
Whippet Boy; Can't ye stay on at school a bit more, mate? Get some more exam results under ye belt. Last ye a life time they will and no one can ever take them away from ye. Then a full, clean driving liscence would be de riggour. Keepers need to carry sacks of feed and equipment about the place. Pest Controllers too. Places at Sparsholt aren't just there for the taking. There's many more applicants each year than there are places. A years hands on experiance is a great help, if not a prerequissete. Bit easier to find that year too, if ye can drive and show ye can put two words or numbers together. It's a f*cking hard race out here, mate. Every little something ye can pick up before joining in would be a bonus along the way. And be ready to stack shelves - or better, get some work with a jobbing builder / building maintanence man - while ye wait. Knowing how to put two bits of wood together and generally make yeself handy is another boon. As is learning what it's like to fetch and carry for a man who just seems to order ye about all day while doing seemingly nothing himself. Got all that and more coming to ye. All part of growing up in the big, bad world, mate Thing is, ye have to show ye that little bit special. Make yeself stand out from the rest of the crowd. Give them a reason to pick You. Not the next enthusiastic youngster with a ferret at home. Best of luck.
