craigyboy 1,274
hi mate,i raised about 40 shamo chicks last year and they eat anything and fecking loads of it,i fed mine on bread and bakery products most days, luckily my niece works in a bakery and she would drop off a binbag full of pies, pasties, scones, loaves, cakes twice a wk plus i gave em mixed corn everyday, growers pellets,as much greens as they would eat and maggots and castors by the gallon,i would recommend the maggots as theyre just little protein pills and my shamos turned into big healthy birds, the only trouble is the price,in the fishing shops maggots are about £2.30 a pint and castors £2.90 a pint,my shamos were eating between 1-2 gallon a week but luckily again i have an uncle who runs a maggot farm and he gives me a gallon for a tenner,i also bought asda price tuna once a week which they wolf down need any advice just ask il help if i can

I will hang the greens high once theyve grown strong enough, let them earn there greens. Cheers again Craig (toplad)

Cheers again Craig (toplad) not a problem mate, maggots are good,my mate who has reared shamos a damn sight longer than me couldnt believe the size and condition of my birds and i put it down to the maggots and the amount they was eating, plus you cant really overdo em either and theyre good for any age especially growing chicks, the castors have more goodness than maggots but variety is the key, chopped boiled egg is another good un mate forgot to say dont buy any coloured maggots or castors, just plain white ones Edited March 16, 2011 by craigyboy
SEAN3513 7
they'll eat anything !!! good quality corn and some fresh ( growing in the pens) greens. maggots..........now theres a top tip
craigyboy 1,274
as i said mate i reared shamos,i know your are a different breed but i believe the fundamental things are the same, were both after bigger the better healthy birds another little tip is when i caught things while hunting, rabbits, hares, pheasants, ducks, deer etc it is either ate by me an my family or the dogs so when i had excess id cook some up for the birds, all of the said above was wolfed down, just make sure you chop it small to aid digestion,i even chuck a skinned raw rabbit carcass in with em,and by christ it looks like the vultures have been
BULLDOUG 199
Its mad to think of them as meat eaters really, but when i was a wee boy me and ma dad breed budgies and my dad would hang cooked chickens for them, (somthing geoff capes usaed to do with his budgies (and they could rip yellow pages up wi there wings LOL). Really looking forward to getting them on a nice balanced diet, also im looking for some other stuff like asil or shamo, maybe somthing a bit different? DIDO.1 22,851
I worked on a chicken farm when I was young, we used to go in the big sheds and lift up boards we had left in the corners, when a mouse bolted the hens would proper course it round, if they caught it they would rip it to shreds and eat it. These wer only normal laying warrens.
BULLDOUG 199
DIDO.1 i have 30 warrens that live together and believe me ive seen how cruel they can be. I once found a huge dead rat in the run, not a pretty site and not one of my hens were hurt at all Warrens IMO are great natured birds but only if your on a higher level than them in the food chain ATB D
