i have a bibio on the dropper all the time and it always takes trout

black and peacock in various sizes allways seem to work for me on the two still waters i fish. there's a marrow spoon in my bag to check to see what they are feeding on so i can closely match it, when it gets really hard a tiny grey duster on the surface can sometimes be good. i am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but this is what seems to do the trick for me where i fish. atb tom.

if there was a best fly for trout, there would be only the one. Keep the fly in the water as much as possible. A black beetle is always a good one, but do one with one turn of silver under the arse representing the air bubble, most beetles ( pattern ) dont have that, and it makes a big difference.

Gold Ribbed Hares Ear anywhere. Cats whisker anywhere. Most olive nymphs.

Got all my gear ready now and just doing some flies right now.

Three fly cast, Williams favourite, Blue upright, Greenwells glory. If you dont get a knock with them on the river, f*ck off down the pub matey. :boogie:

yep i have to agree when fishing a team of wets on local north east rivers the greenwells is always on my team, however if there was one best fly my fly boxes would be very simple, i have 4 boxes with me in summer( dries, wets, more wets but all spider patterns, then the big guns for dark and sea trout) far too open question, depends on water, time of year, weather, hatch, size of local flies, size of fish, try and match the hatch is an idea, spider patterns (wet flies) will always work on a flowing river fished as a team ie snipe and purple, greenwells glory, partridge and orange , i do extra well as i tie a fine gold rib on them and they work, point fly gold head or heavy ribbed, but dry fly fishing is the best , but then you got resee fishing which is a totally different ball game. all in all the water you fish just ask the fisherman but if they anything like half the blokes on the wear they'll hide their flies from you some sad people lol
