dso88 15
what the best fly for trout ???? Quote Link to post
Parabuteos lad 878
its down to personal opinion, the lake itself, the trout themselves and how predatory the trout in the lake are. we all have our favourites and my favourites are olive damsels, hothead damsels, dancers and fritz etc. i do however love fishing the dry fly as it excellent fun to see the trout emerge and take the fly. J Darcy 5,871
The one that's most often in the water..... Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
That has to be one of the most open ended questions you could ask. It's dependant on so many things, the water, it's type and location, the time of year and day, what is hatching, so many small variables. Some days one fly just seems to catch and others your swapping every half hour. My favourite for sport is either a team of buzzers or a single fly, great takes and usually a better quality of fish is your at a still water, than you would get with a lure. Quote Link to post

theferreter 311
it just depends on what ever hatch is out at the time i always find buzzers fish well or the hares ear Quote Link to post

mick20 23
There is brown and aswell as grayling on the stretch im only just getting into fly fishing so i need to build my fly box up would you use a smaller fly this time of year ? I like upstream nymphing for grayling using czech nymphs or a green hotspot shrimp, using a partridge and orange fished across the flow has worked for me too, if the river is deep or fast flowing then i would use weighted versions of these. Also a grey duster (tied parachute style) is a good dry fly i find. When going for brownies, in a river, i have used many many flies but tend to have my favourites; dry flies- gold ribbed hare's ear (parachute), sherry spinner, grey duster. Wet flies- mallard and claret, pheasant tail nymph. If i were fishing a river for the first time i would probably start with a small montana nymph on the point with a bibio on a dropper (24-36 inches above). Fly size would normally be 12-14 but conditions on the day could change that. Normally fished on a floating double taper line. Sometimes you just got to match the hatch mate, so local knowledge and watercraft are a must. ATB, happy fishing. Mick Quote Link to post
