FightTheBan 1,147
GET OUT WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. First and foremost. You cannot tell what is in the hole from a rule book, ony experience will teach you this. And this cannot be learned over the internet. If you value your dogs, permission and freedom then do this. If you have nowt to loose then all the best, keep at it and you will see what is there when you break through FTB Quote Link to post

moonlighter 1,163
Basically if there is a badger living there then it's a badger set.... For example if you wa ferreting a large rabbit warren and you dug down to a badger you would be gilty in the eyes of the law for interfering with a badger set. If your bushings though your more likely to push a fox in a badger set than the other way round., so becareful if you work your dogs loose. Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
If this lad is truly looking for advice and i have my doubts then its been overlooked that the law classes anywhere inhabited by a badger as an occupied sette and as such you are disturbing a sette by digging ,moving or entering a dog .This includes an artificial earth ,stack of bales ,pile of logs or tires and anywhere else a badger will inhabit from time to time .Even for a time served lad the chances are he will find one in an unlikely place and then your in the hands of the gods.A terrier that only marks fox is a great asset . Tomm Parr 30
You can tell a badger sett by these things: Badgers dig latrines dug within a few hundreds yards of the sett, usually at the edges of fields, copses etc. the latrines are always filled with shit and it us often runny. Foxes usually leave solid turds in blatant places so as to be seen; There is often black and white fur and old bedding kicked up out of the main entrances with badgers; There are usually many more entrances than you'd see with a fox; badgers are always exending their setts; Badger prints are round and stubby with noticeable clawmarks that look out of place in the print, you often can't see the pad imprints either, fox prints look more doglike and are less visible because they are lighter and more nimble creatures; There is always black and white fur caught on roots and wire near the hole, especially anything that sticks out in front of the hole; There are always little scratched pits near badger setts, where they have dug down a few inches to catch worms. They look similar to rabbit scratches albeit larger; Badgers have well used pathways that lead straight to their setts, usually along field edges; Finally, the holes are usually much larger than with foxes, badgers are quite chunky after all. Terrier Sam 297
Ok. This is the deal. You can flush a fox out to a gun using a soft terrier i.e. a terrier that will bay but not put itself in danger or cause injury to its quarry. It is illeagel to enter your dog to ground if there are any signs of badgers living there. you are also only allowed to dig down to your dog if you beleive your dog or it's quarry is in danger. There are other bits and bobs that are in this law - other things that you can and cannot do but that is the main part. Hope this helps - This info was given to me by a country sports solicitor Sam Quote Link to post
