How to do ferreting

Recommended Posts

Hello I went ferreting with my "expert" friend yesterday and came back with nothing.

We went from 7am till 3pm netted 8 warrens and had nothing what are we doing wrong because

surely we should have had 1 rabbit out of 8 warrens, shouldnt we?

Please help never done this before absolutley inexperienced, and my "expert" friend

couldn't decide which end to peg on the nets, so I am guessing he is as clueless as I am

We all have days like that now n then mate. You want to pack up ferreting now though because there will be younguns to ground. This is the season we leave the rabbits etc alone to breed in peace so theres plenty about next season for us to chase. Also its not nice to think of ferrets killing a nest full of rabbit kits and if it layes up afterwards digging it out can be a pain in the arse! Where abouts are you based? I dont mind showing you and your friend the ropes next season if your not to far.

What is the best time to start Ferreting?is there a season as such? during which months is it best to leave the rabbits alone?

There is no legal close season but traditionally you only ferret when the month has an R in it so januaRy, febuRuary, maRch, apRil etc etc. I disagree with that these days tho, i caught a few pregnant doess over a month ago! I wont be ferreting now till september time when im sure theres no kits underground. Although rabbits can breed at any time of year so you can never guarantee it, you can very well hedge your bets by waiting till september.

Think we where all like that when we started and im a great believer in the learning curve stick at it and you will suddenly click and see where your going wrong .And it might take a few more outings but you will get into a few rabbits

Where in west wales?

Best to leave the bunnies alone with the ferrets from when you start seeing the land wake up, until it starts to go to sleep again, whenever that may be. Mainly because it becomes a proper clusterfuck trying to ferret fluffy hoppers.

I had them out the other day on a new permission that wants clearing quick as,spent all day trying to jump on rabbits no bigger than a rat and watching them hole hop, unless it's neccesery mate I'd wait a bit to start working em proper.
