A newby with a question!

I'm new on here so firstly, hi all!

 

I think i may well be opening up a big bag of worms here but here goes....

 

I have read lots of things on this forum, lots of people dead against certain breeds of terrier - partly why i have signed up.

 

I really like the look of plummer terriers. Nice strong looking dogs - not too leggy but not dragging their arse along the floor either.

 

I'm looking for an all rounder but i need it to work below ground. Are plummers a good choice - if so, what lines - if not, then what would you suggest?

If earth work is a must then no,im not being bitchy as i owner a plummer and have owned several but there wouldnt be my 1st choice as an earth dog.As a fast ratting, rabbit(preban mink, stoat) and a pack terrier then they are great.

imoa the failure rate as digging dogs is just a shade to high, i would opt for a pat or a lakey from a good working line.

I have had a bit of experience with foxing already - just had a season bringing on my 2 year old jack bitch. But she is too soft for my liking. 100% nose and brains but when i need to dig down she is a couple of feet away from charlie himself. I've also got mates that have lakie x jacks or lakie x patts and spend as much of their time mendin the things as they do working them.

 

I guess there isn't an easy option??

I think bb i right.I've owned a fair few and still have a couple.As allrounders,they are great,but if its just an earthdog.Then a patterdale is probably better.

The better earthdog lines are Coalville(not that many about now) or REmlap from source.

SAM,there has been only one consistant line of earthdog's and thats "REMLAP",I own a 12"tts dog that has never let me down above and below ground,you will find it hard to aquire a decent pup off a breeder as most pups are well booked in advance,plummer earthdogs are in a minority but they are out there,I wish you luck in finding one if you decide to own one,they are very intelligent and don't take well to harsh treatment,as an all round dog they are capable of anything asked of them,a lot of fools without any experience of owning one will no doubt come online and repeat the same old rubbish but as you've asked the question I'm sure you expect it,atb,wirralman

Hello Sam,

 

I am new to the forum too. I am trying to train my 6m old plummer dog and have started doing a bit of hedgework with him the last month. He is leggy as many plummers are (they are pack dogs really after all) but is keen to go to ground and does so readily. I doubt how useful he'd be though as shorter legs are far better underground. He is much better flushing from the hedge and is like a whippet going after rabbits...

 

I think everyone has hit the nail on the head really in advising paterdales or lakelands for earthwork and plummers for working hedges or above ground. I had an old lakeland and he was a demon underground.

 

I see you are in Wales. What part? I grew in Cwmbran/Pontypool/Newport area.

i have a plummer that is great down a hole its the first 1 i've had and plan to stay with them i've alaways had russells that have done me proud ive had bayers and i've had little buggers that mix it up and end up in sick bay all the time. i've also had a few patts over the years i've found them a bit hard for my likeing but i would never knock them especially if you may come across things you dont realy want to be working. its down to personal choice ask around people you know and see what they work and what you like and go from there good luck

Plummers do come in all shapes and sizes some as small as 11" and some big dogs at 16",I've owned them all.Sam if its a Plummer you're heart set on,then ask and watch.All the various groups will give you there sales talk.Open mind as well a ears.If its an allrounder then a plummer is for you.Earthdog only then a Patterdale etc.To use a Plummer solely as a earthdog would be a waste of its other talents in my opinion.

Ask and read as much as you can about the breed and look at the plummer threads on this forum.Quiz the guys that say they dig to thier plummer,some certainly do,but its the bull sh**ters you need to avoid,and once you start talking to them you may find some come unstuck

the biggest talent any terrier can have is the ability too work too ground consistantly if they hav nt got this trait there second rate they may do a job for someone else ie ratting hunting for rabbits fair play if your happy you feed it but too say a plummer is wasted on earth work only dont make me laugh if the breed owners would get act together and breed the plummers that do work too ground between each other then and only then may the plummer turn a corner and be viewed as more than a wannabe imo.

i have plummers that work to ground thay get the job dun yes sun lines are beter than others the same as eney other breed. i,v got a dog hir at 6 month old wonting to fly to groung and a bich that is 7 month old that wont ethan go in a hegrow and NO the pups ant for sal be for eney one jumps on me. if you phome eney of the clubs up thay will pount you in the way to go as earth lines i'd cll the PTA as thay have got all 3 top clubs dog's on the register new but thay will no more a bout ther own lines that ptgb and the epta as thay have only had there dog's on there reg form the start of the year atb swag

wow ok thanks guys. In my opinion plummers are nice looking but its a dog to do the job im after this time round. I know that there are some people who work plummers to ground but like everyone is saying, that isnt what the majority of them are being bred for.

 

I think i'll turn more towards patts or lakies but anymore comments or views would be appreciated too!!
