CarraghsGem 92
ive 2 saddleback X tamworth X old spot piglets newly housed in the field i have rented, they are 7wks old 1 black boar, 1 ginger sow what age am i best off killing them for a spit roast? which of the 2 would be the better pig for the spit roast? or would i be better off with a different breed of pig? does anyone have instructions for the best way to cook the pig? also does anyone have any handy ways to build a spit? materials arent much of a problem and we have a welder, just want to build something cheap that works well, nothing fancy raw materials i have already are plenty of scrap iron and enough stone to build the great wall of china
ashleybee 7
You don't want to get them too fat so make sure your not over feeding them, depending on what your feeding them if its pellets I'd say if there not clearing thier trough in about 10 mins cut the feed down a bit, thats twice a day. As for age I'd say no more tham 5 months I will say I've never done one for whole roasting I usually grow them for pork or bacon I keep to 5 months for pork and depending on the size / shape about a month or so longer for bacon. I don't think it matters which one you kill for roasting but make sure the abbatoir knows thats what its for otherwise it will probably come back in two halves. OLD GOAT 6
Don't know much ! but the pigs sound a good cross & the age for the pig to go on the spit is up to u , how big do u want it ? I have seen a few spits as I used to sell alot of firewood to a few people doing this type of thing for parties, weddings, etc. I always had to drop the wood off the day before as they would start early in the morning as it takes a while to do. I can remember a 4 month old pig taking a good 4 to 5 hours to cook, also all the spits I have seen used a elec motor to turn the pig & they all used to buy a cord to get the job done, maybe having a few stkies left over ! All the spits were home made ! Don't have any pics ! Hope this is of some help.

ATB Ashley my local butcher is licenced to slaughter at my premises, although the dept guy is due to visit me soon so i'll check with him first, just feeding them pignuts and apples that came from the tree in my own garden as i was told that produce from my own property was allowed as long as it was fed direct to them and not via the kitchen. was thinking 4mths old, although im looking to get the loan of a spit with a motor, or i'll build one
