Any motor mechanics?

I have got a `94 escort diesel van that is struggling to start from cold.Iti s turning over but does not want to "fire".After 6-8 goes the battery starts to fade so it will not start.I have had the battery tested it is ok.I fitted new bosch glow plugs when this first started to happen about a month ago.The van starts first turn of the key for the rest of the day,if i get it started, when the engine is warm but next morning back to the same thing.Anyone got any ideas?. Burn it?,yes i`ve thought of that :D

jessdale trying giving it a bit more heat through the glow plugs turn the ignition untill the glow plug light'

comes on and when it goes out turn the key off and give it another turn to put the glow plug's back on try it a few time's it might fire up for you then

i know my mate bullet does something with a bit of wire i think he put's it from the battery to the glow plug's to give more heat he might explain what he does in a bit

i know he is off sick for a week

i think that old age is catching him up :whistle: :whistle:

go to ford and get a new fuel filter it comes with primer pump they are comon for drawing air in ive seen this lots of times ,could also be the glow plugs but al bet its the primer pump.ps nothing wrong with the right glow plugs for the car lots of them well over the 150,000 mil;e mark never had the need to up grade the glow plugs,still think your problem is the primer pump.just red your post agian and you have all ready fitted glow plugs,99% its your primer causing the problem.

when it fire's up from cold, does it make a clicking sound. If so the tappits could be going, They are simple to replace (if your not confident, see a mechanic) but cost about £15 a go.

 

Saying that, i dont think the tappits would cause it to be a "bitch" to start from cold. But its certainly worth opening the head to check.

 

Try adding a bit of hydraulic tappit release fluid into the oil

 

I dont think it could be the starter motor itself, as its only playing up when cold.

I had the very same problem when i had an immobiliser fitted to my truck.The fella who installed it broke a wire to the relay which puts the energy into the glow plugs.

 

Easy way to check for this is to pop the bonnet, turn the ignition on to warm the plugs and then feel the ends of the glow plugs to see if they are getting hot, if they aren't then thats your problem and you only need find out why.

 

To get the thing started from cold at the moment, find the heater plug relay and run a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to one of the power/cable inlets and this should energise the solenoid and warm the plugs, dont leave the wire attached though as the plugs will continue to get warm.

 

Good luck and next time dont buy a Ford.

If its smokey ( white smoke ) when its turning over but not starting, or just after it starts, its the glow plugs.Or an electrical fault in the glow plug loom.

If theres none its a fuel problem

had the same problem on a diesel mondeo i had

check the red glow plug lead that runs across the top of the glow plugs

mine looked ok but had corroded at a joint near the battery,

worth a look as new wire is about £10,you can also bodge it by stripping back the wire to good and putting in a block connector
