DogMagic 461
A "born hunter" asking questions like that! Do yourself a favour mate and ask yourself 2 questions: is my jill a good worker? and is the hob my mates got a good worker? If you get 2 yeses then breed from them, if not dont. Colour dont even come into it. Quote Link to post

tote 854
This could have been an interesting thread but what have we got? The usuall suspects having digs. The lad asked an interesting question about silver ferrets, can you breed them together? I've never seen a silver never mind had one so I don't know the answer and can only guess that those that have bothered to post haven't answered the question maybe they don't know. It could've been an educational thread, but. Quote Link to post
black recking it 730
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH MATE HAD FERRIT,S YEAR,S AGO NEVER BOTHERED WHAT I WAS BREEDING AS LONG AS BOTH WERE GOOD WORKER,S IT,S JUST A COLOUR JUST MY OPINION MATE I ALSO NEVER USED COLLAR,S ECT AND THEY NEVER LAID UP WAS OUT EVERY WEEKEND WITH THEM IN THE WINTER HANDLED THEM ALL THE TIME WAS MOSTLY POLE CAT,S I USED Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
Colour means nothing to working ability. Silvers can be bred together(some will disagree) but ask yourself ,,why are you breeding ??? BUT the reason folk have a dig, is this is a hunting site, as far as we are concerned the only people that breed for colours and types etc are folk looking to flog ferrets for stupid cash to stupid folk !! Now I am NOT saying that is the case hear,, I very much doubt it in fact,, but the lad neads to hear that working ability is all that matters here. I think most have a dig because the majority of questions are recycled time and time again, especially at this time of year. Thats why I tried to keep schtum!! lol But anyway,,, you can breed the silvers together, just don`t inbreed at all to keep colour!. there are plenty who will not breed silver to silver because of supposed genetic issues,, but I`ve never seen it,, and I`ve done it,, and I will do it again probably (if my local rescue centre hasn`t got any decent ferrets) ATB Quote Link to post
tote 854
Thanks for the reply Rake aboot, it's an interesting post. I agree that colour means nothing as far as working ability goes but you know what it's like, some prefer this colour and others prefer that. What's really interesting is what you say about breeding silvers together, you say it can be done but also say some would disagree. As you say you've done it without any complications but say that others will not do it because of supposed genetic issues. Could it be similair to breeding merle to merle in dogs, that can be done and has been on many occasions yet there is always a risk of ending up with some of the litter being blind, deaf or both. Can anyone shed more light on the subject? Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
another one who hasent a clue on how to keep ferrets go and get urself some books Aye but he knows enough to know silver ferrets are worth more (for some reason!) I wouldn't breed a silver x silver as this can lead to genetic problems, i would also (personally) not use a BEW, although i have not tried or seen this tried there is a lot to suggest that a bew and a silver are basicly the same thing. So as a result i would stick any (the best) hob over her, some kits will be silver and some wont, so if you like silvers there will be one for you to keep back, and the rest of the litter not being silver aint a problem unless you were planning to sell them all for more money. As you are compounding the problem. Silver to silver can be done, with clever outcrossing to diff colors. But why would it be important to breed whole litters of silvers other than the possible price tag? Even someone breeding cos of personal preferance will be happy with the odd silver in the litter.
