took ferrets to school today!!

Recommended Posts

well we had a bit of a mad morning today!! :icon_eek:

it was my daughter's last day at school before we move to Ireland :boogie: so I had packed a few party bits for the class, and had said I'll bring the ferrets in to school for the class to see them (age five) :wallbash: which added to the usual, breakfasted, walk dog, get dressed, pack lunch, morning maddness! so put the three jills in a cat carrier, a hob in my proper ferret box lol a bag of ferret goodies and went to school,, dropped little lady to her class and went to the office to sort paperwork and general chit chat, as a last minute thought I asked the receptionist if they had any of the tubing that pictures are sometimes posted in, for the ferrets to mess about with,, she replied i may have something and disappeared for a bit,, leaving me standing there with the ferret scrapping wood shavings through the box onto the floor :icon_redface: the lady anyways finally came back with the BIGGEST tube ever!! it was the whole tube that goes inside a roll of carpet! :icon_eek: she nearly smashed the light off the ceiling getting it in the door!!! :whistling: so we proceeded to the classroom armed with massive ferret tunnel, bag of bits and four ferrets,, it was a very sweet sight  all children were sat in a big circle hands on their laps and looking really excited, I placed the tunnel in the middle and various cat toys around,, asked if any of the children knew what a ferret was,, only my daughter raised her hand, in an admittedly slightly showing off way :whistling: so i spoke a bit about them and took out the polecat hob first, explained his colour and let every child have a stoke -with me holding him! and he played with some toys before going back in his box, took the two sandy jills out and they went through tunnels and sniffed a couple of kids feet and were held by me to be stroked by each child, lastly the silver jill who is more a yellow with bluey hairs was allowed out and similar to the above,, it was really interesting to see various reactions to the ferret, an animal none of them have seen before.

what really surprised me was the in depth questions they asked me, such as where they live, what they eat, good on ya kid!! :victory: had a nice few giggles though, i was asked if they live in a nest as they look like they could curl up ;) and would they eat the spiders my room :D but my complete favourite was one little boy asked me if they'd eat a cat,, the girl next to him said no thats too big,, the little lad goes :hmm: what about the leg of a cat :toast:

the school are writting a report for me to bring to ireland so I can show I've done this before, I must say though I took kits to my daughters nursery this was by far much more fun, perhaps partly as I knew what to expect but I loved the genuine interest they had and such brilliant questions :tongue2: I do stongly aim to do the same when i get settled in Ireland and hope to include other age groups and more information, help them be introduced to the idea of ferreting

was great fun! brilliant breath of fresh air during the maddness of moving!

thank you! it will be fantastic once i'm there just tryng to arrange it as cheaply and effecient as poss.. if ye find a magic wand let me borrow it :tongue2: just dump me and the little lady at new house with dogs and ferrets and the little bit of stuff i'm bringing with me,, i'll give it straight back i promise!! :whistling:

but yes thanks regarding ferrets both of you, I really did enjoy it and greatly looking forward to doing it again, have a few ideas on what to make it a tad better,,, like bring in a fold up puppy play pen with lino lining the inside so they can't climb up, that means the kids could watch them play without me weoorying about fingers..... :icon_eek: and perhaps print off some photos of different colours and how they change from very tiny kit to an adult,, maybe even some colouring in and ferret linked activities if i really get going :victory: thanks for reading all the very best xxx

Good luck on your move.. and Great ferret PR.. its amazing how many people have never seen a ferret, it can only be a good thing showing them to kids as they wont forget..

can just imagine little Tommy in the next couple of years replying to his dad asking " what you want for christmas son ".

Tommy replies " 50 hemp nets, a mk3 locator, good spade & a carring box,

Oh and one or two of them little furry things i saw at school when i was five Dad........:thumbs:

Nice One! We had a pets day once at primary school... I took a my Shetland Pony "Rambo" haha

Just an idea maybe you could make a 10 minute video of them in action out on the field.

Setting up nets

putting ferret in and

watching a rabbit bolt (Without the ferret hanging off it and no blood) lol

Not sure if despatching would be wise i dunno (i guess its a way of life)

Its brilliant what you doing anyway, All the best.
