Recommended Posts

you can come on here and ask for advice but its not half as useful as a good book most books have everything you need to know some things you cant learn from experience + with a book itll teach you things you might need to no urgently in the future. I thought ferrets were easy to look after but theres more to them than i realised at first.so get a book it wont half help and then if theres anyother problems post it up here (im not having a go,it justs helps to have one )

let it begin.....some members are not keen on these posts because this is stuff you should know before you start breading ferrets

Aaaaaaa men brother

how do they expect me to know, you have to start somewhere, i thought i would post her becoz it full of experienced people. but i see it has it part of snobs, which think they are superior

Its not a case of people being snobby or a case of people being superior..... If you are a responsible person (and i am not passing judgement) then you would learn about these things first. You would not drive a car without first learning to drive..... The best book i can recommend is James Mckay. This is full of information from housing to illnesses and everything in between. One other thing..... There are alot of people on here with alot of knowledge, but you wont get any help on here with the big I am attitude. Treat people and their views with respect and most of the time you will get it back.

Your first question has already been answered, as for the second question about "when do I feed the kits on slops, my answer

would be never, where would they get slops in the wild?

No disrespect fella but if you are asking these questions you should not be breeding.

you should have a good few years of ferret keeping under your belt before youeven consider it, but in answer to your questions about 42 days, NO SLOP, raw meat from about 3 weeks.

What have i missed

The easiest way to remember the gestation period is a day short of six weeks

And start putting a bit of rabbit into the nest box from three weeks onwards they might not eat it put they will suck it to death and take some pressure off the jill .

"You would not drive a car without first learning to drive."

How would you learn to drive a car if you don't get in one and drive it?

L plates are for learner drivers are they not? Saying that I can't see the conection between learning to drive and breeding ferrets.

The lad has asked for advice and he's been given some, after that it's up to him if he takes it onboard or doesn't.:hmm:

I dont think its fair to be having a pop at the fella. His jill isnt yet pregnant so i reckon hese doing things the right way round. Yes he could go and buy a book but there is a lot of very knowledgable people on here, why shouldnt he ask them? Yes a book is a good idea and i also would advise him to get one but i also say that he will get a lot of advice a lot quicker on an internet forum (and this is the hunting life forum), ordering a book can take a week or more for it to turn up and if the jills in season now it needs a session asap in order to avoid the possible illnesses they can pick up if left in season for to long.

A ferrets pregnancy is about 42 days. You dont wean them, they wean themselves. At around 3 weeks old they will start to leave the nest and stumble upon the rabbit carcass you put there for food. They will have a sniff then a chew etc etc. They will still suckle milk from the jill for another 3 weeks but after that they should be fully weaned and ready to leave home. Any more questions your welcome to pm me.

Well said DogMagic, it does sometimes look like some are quick to criticize.

At least the lad is wanting to learn.
