There is also a reason that folk spend a lot of time creating/breeding purpose bred dogs over a long long time, like has been said a good lurcher will do a gundogs job better than a good gundog will do a lurcher, but the best 'gundog lurcher' would get hammered into the ground by the best gundogs. Cos at the end of the day gundogs aint those things you see sitting in a field next to some bloke on a peg, retrieving the odd shot bird. Quote Link to post

fallow buck 18
took a lurcher bitch beating at the end of this season with a formal shoot, only done it informally, I had a strong feeling that they expected her to be crap and were just waiting to be able to have her as the loke dog, but she worked well the whole day, i left feeling proud of my dog and an invite to come back typical I plan to move country and get offered beating and ferreting on me doorstep, mind you its better hunting where i'm going! just keep them trained well during the summer, make sure their calm round people and other dogs and listen well to you, helps to be sure their not gun shy too, i got round this by taking her out as a pup with someone with an air rifle, he shot a few, pup ran a few, the first rabbit she caught was on one of these outings so it was a helpful introduction towards a shotgun noise,, country show shooting demos help as does walking in countryside where shooting is happening allthe very best, be great to hear from you again how the bitch does next season look forward to seeing pics with a smug look on her face!!
