I would go for bantams then, they come in all colours etc

 

Myself i keep 30 warrens for eggs (these cant be touched in this department IMO)

 

Also i keep a couple of old english game birds for show there right characters

whats the cheapest for me to do,buy 10 bantams and hatch 10 good layers or the other way round, how much are they round the auctions. any help would be vary apprieciated

 

 

black rock are good layers and also very tame and if you hatch your bantams your not guaranteed hens mate ....john

if you want a good laying bantam go for light sussex bantams. hardy good layers docile nice to look at. if you are hatching your own roughly half of them would be cockerals. then you have the problem of getting them homes or getting rid of them.

ex battery hens are suprisingly good layers....my ex battery hen lay more than the young speckledy and a rhode island red i have, they just need a bit of tlc when you first get them .

 

ex bats tend to be warren's , someone else recommended them above

I tryed an incubator before, didnt like it to be honest, very un natural seeing babys with a teddy for a mum.

 

If it was me i would go to a local poultry auction and buy your first couple then you will soon happen on a broody hen to sit eggs, its a fantastic experience that way, watching all the babys follow mom everywher is fun, as the other way i found quite upsetting (im a soft fooker though) But thats my opinion anyhooo
