HAWKE SR6 SCOPES

Recommended Posts

JUST BOUGHT THE HAWKE SR12 6X18X44AO SCOPE, I CAN WORK OUT THE VERTICAL AIMING POINTS, AND THE WIND ALLOWANCE POINTS! IM FINDING IT A BIT HARD TO WORK OUT THE RANGE FINDER AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF THE SCOPE??? IVE SEEN THE VIDEO WITH NICK JENKINS I UNDERSTAND THE A=3" B=6" C=9" D=12" AT 50YRDS...AM I RIGHT BY SAYING THAT IF A RABBITS EARS MEASURES 3" AND THEY FILL THE (A) SECTION FINDER THIS MAKES IT 50YRDS AWAY???? BUT IF THE RABBITS 3" EARS FILL THE .B. SECTION THIS HALFS THE 50YRDS MAKING IT 25YRDS AWAY???? AND THEN SAME AGAIN IN SECTION .C.HALFING AGAIN MAKING IT 12.1/2 YARDS AWAY???

Not far wrong at all :) Or another way of thinking: If your rabbits ears fill 2 of the marks divide 50 yards by 2 and get 25yds, however, if it fills 3 of the markers you divide 50 by 3 to 16yds.

So just divide 50 by how many marks it covers, if its in D then thats 4 markers or 12yds.

Dont forget the zoom must be set at x6 for the sr6 reticle and x12 for sr12 reticle, anything other than this will give you the wrong distances.

thanks mate, what do you mean by filling 2? or 3? of the markers??? i thought you ranged it by just one of the markers? and yes mate youre right about the magx6 and magx12!! i forgot to mention that!

No, you range it by how many of the markers, a b c d, that are filled, so if the rabbits 3" ears fill the line in the reticle marked 'A' then the rabbit is at 50yds.

If the rabbits ears fill A & B then the rabbit is 25yds away.

Rabbits ears fill A,B & C then its only 16yds away.

If the little fellas ears fill A,B & and half of the next graduation you divide 50yds by 2.5 (which is how many graduations are covered by the ears) so 50/2.5 =20yds

So if the bunnies ears only covered half of the space between the A marker, you divide 50 by .5 or half and that gives you 100yds.

If the ears cover 3/4 of the A marker you divide 50 by .75 or 3/4 and you get 66yds.

Basically if you go through all the maths you will come up with a list of ranges for bunnies with 3" ears, you can then make whats known as a 'range card'

You can do this for any object you know the height of, thats where the table comes from A=3" B=6" C=9" D=12" AT 50YRDS

put something that mesures 3 inchs 25 ...50 ...75...yards ect .check the magnification .if my magnification is set at 7.5x it is realy 9x .So on my scope if I want 9x mag I set the mag ring on the scope to 7.5x .This error is for all magnifications.

Barry what scope are you using though mate, We are talking about a Hawke scope with the SR12 reticle - SR6 reticle is used at x6 mag and the SR12 reticle is used at x12 mag and you are talking about x7.5 mag and x9 mag

I have the SR12 scope but never use the ret for range finding.

I would be interested so hear how you get on with it pal.

It's a great idea, with one major pitfall. It relies on you having something of known size to use for range finding. Sadly bunny ears (or other parts) aren't a uniform size (in fact they vary greatly) and it's difficult to tell how big a bunny is at range. Reminds me of the Father Ted episode "This one is small, and THIS one is far away!"

If you bunny's ears fill A and B, you might think that they are at your .22 zero range. But if they are a small bunny, and have two inch ears, then in fact they are far closer than you think. Ditto if your target buggs has much bigger ears, you'll be underestimating the range. It could easily be enough to miss, or wound, the animal.

It's a good back up, but not to be used on it's own. Work on your range estimating by eye, and use this as a back up.
