fat man 4,741
Not all of us hunt with hounds SHAMO and we all dont carry guns to acomadate a fox bolting,so its handy to have a lurcher about especially when a fox is doin harm.A farmer or keeper would not be happy to see you waving bye..bye to a killer.I rarely if ever need a lurcher to draw the terrier will always be on top of it then its down to the man who digs it or the land owner if hes about.I would far sooner see a good lurcher work than to see a fox been shot,no sport in that.JMHO. 6 Quote Link to post
smasher 1,055
I have never taken a Lurcher or any other type of catching/drawing Dog out on a digging day. If a Fox bolted it was waved good bye and good luck, see you on a Hunt Day. Then we would get down to the real aim of the day, to dig to a Terrier on it's proper prey. If 'one' bolted and the dog never moved, ideal, we can get another dig possibly with a different Terrier later on. At the end I considered it an insult to the prey and Terrier to be in a situation to NEED a drawing dog. It was just a question of letting a young Terrier have a look, if I had one, then clear the Tube and let it by for another day. If there was a problem or the Farmer required it, then, Dog out, let it come forward and 'Tail it' and take care of it as quickly and humanely as possible. If we had a Gun handy then things were less awkward. Take the body away from the 'dig' and bury it somewhere else away from it's former Home. Then slates, logs or something to create a new Roof for the Chamber and backfill, if we were moving on, if not sort it all out when we did move on. My personal opinion is there is no need for a drawing Dog if you have the right Terriers, knowledge/experience and respect for your prey. Can count on one Hand the times I have allowed a Lurcher to come out on a 'digging day'. Nearly all of them have been invites, either way, me up there or them down here. Seen some supposed good Terriers be 'saved' by a drawing Dog, being able to get up a Tube 5 ft and draw the prey. A Terrier I would of left there!!! There is also the ability to travel with Terriers in a Box and keep them there until required.......discression. All personal opinion and why some have mediocre digging dogs and some have none because they cull......lol. Good post, 1 Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
A lurcher is a very handy tool around an earth if you dig on your own as I do. Obviously it is illegal to use one for any purpose other than marking. Which is what I use mine for. Etc. FTB Quote Link to post

fat man 4,741
Says it all what you mean MD.You saying you would let a fox bolt say after it killed lambs or game birds and wave bye at it,dont think you would have that permission very long.Nothing wrong with a lurcher for a fox bolting especially in places where a gun cannot be used. 3 Quote Link to post
Bootsha 1,306
I never go digging without my lurcher, it'd feel like being naked without one on a bury, very usefull dogs for all sorts of reasons. But all my dogs are shit so what the f*ck Quote Link to post

hack 301
every one to there own but personaly wouldnt have a surface dog or lurcher what ever you want to call it at a dig Quote Link to post
stevemac 445
We have a little terrier that bolts more than we have to dig to. thank hevens I still find it hard to equate a shovel to having fun. No hound pack around here so its the shot gun or my deerhound /greyhound she just stands back and waits for the bolt not seen any get away when hunting with the terrier in this manner. 1 Quote Link to post
