GETTING INTO GREYHOUND RACING?

How do all,

 

I have allways wanted to get into greyhound racing. In the future, their is a possiblity, that i might have more room for such a thing, but only enough space for 1 greyhound.

 

Im in southern Ireland and greyhound racing is big here.

 

I have had greyhounds in the past, but only as workers and also lurchers.

 

How would i go about getting into it folks? Is it all drink and gambling, as the wife reckons?

 

I dont do ither, so prehaps ill do Ok?

 

Any info would be great, cheers.

wouldnt agree that you need plenty of money...like anything else,it depends what end of the scale your aiming at...if your racing at a low grade then not all that expensive...higher end of the scale is higher money of course but thats like anything.

Have to disagree samba,it's more important to "know" what your doing than

have plenty of money.There is a level for everyone in the sport. :thumbs-up:

 

 

Frank if your interested in coursing greyhounds it's the biggest meeting in Ireland

next week down near Clonmel.

The National meeting takes place on 5th,6th and7th of February.

but an average greyhound would bee £1000 upwards for a grader

then if your putting it with a trainer£50 a week then vets fees if thing

ive just got into the greyhound game,got 2 young dogs,just in the middle of schooling one of them at the moment,im really enjoying it aswell,they are a different ball game to lurchers tho,you need to keep them wrapped up in cotton wool,they are finely tuned machines and thats how they have to be kept,i dont know why you need a lot of money tho,yes they do cost a lot to buy,but thats about it.

I was actually thinking of training the greyhound myself, as i love all running dogs, but then again, i know diddly shit about how to bring one on and as you have said Brock, they are finely tuned machines, so would not like to have one ruined.

 

Is their much to schooling them? I did have greyhounds for hunting hares, i road walked them rubed them down ect, but i suppose it would be more extreme?

The price of graders is right down at the minute and you can very easily pick a young average grade dog up for £500 or less and most trainers are about £5 a day + any costs incurred.

If you are training yourself you are best to contact whichever track/tracks you are wanting to run at and find out from them the trial days and suchlike and make sure that if you get a dog then you are going to get enough races to make it worthwhile , as from what I have heard from people in Eire is that the smaller trainers are struggling to get runs and the tracks are using more of the large kennel dogs to fill the card

flaps,this way I don't have any kennel bills as such,it costs about £6/week

to feed each dog.

I could not afford to have a dog with an ngrc trainer just too costly.It's

different in Ireland samba as they operate an open kennel system where

an individual can train their own dog/dogs,it's not dissimilair to flapping

in the UK.This makes it more hands on so in my veiw more enjoyable.

So basicly, i get a pup, not too expensive, as i dont have that much money anyway and can train it myself, that would be more my kind of thing.

Where are the flaping tracks? are there any in the lothians?

 

My wife and I go to shawfield every now and then (purely as spectators)

 

Someone said Wallyford was getting a track again but don't know if it's true.
