JPTfellterrier 65
just after a basic run down of when to and to not handle ferrets for example i hamster you wouldnt pick it up if it had just woken up otherwise it shall go crazy lol. But what about ferrets? Also how the f**k do you get em to stop in the hutch when your trying to feed em Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Just like any other animal i'd leave it be if it was having a shit, eating or just woke up, if you dont know the ferret that well. If its a new ferret, feed it up before you handle it, its less likely to nip you then. Apart from that just handle as much as possible, i can pick mine up still sleeping ( i have a narcoleptic ferret!) and wake them up in my hands and they are fine, hold them upside down, folded up, in a ball, under my arm, in my pockets, on the shoulder - whatever i like. Once they are used to you they are bomb proof little things. Mine particularly like standing on your head. As for stopping them scuttling out when feeing - doesnt happen! Thats the way they are, at least until the get the routine and the place they live. I.e My hobs could jump out when i open the door, and they used to but now they just stand waiting for the rabbit. The jills however still climb out everytime i open the door. Thats ferrets for you! Quote Link to post
Joe67 239
aye mines are the same mate soon as the door is touched they are going nuts to get out and when they get out they are chilled and easly put back in,if your worried about them runing away put a bowl down with raw egg in it,they will just sit and drink it.if you think they might bite dont try pick them up at 100 mph put your hand in front of them, let them know its you and then lift. martnmagik 68
i got mine in the routine of climbing out onto the top of the hutch when i opened the door. just repeatedly show them that food is up there the message will soon sink in. and it saves chasing them round the garden atb mart Quote Link to post
The one 8,522
If there having a crap id leave them but i pick them up in the mornings when there sleeping and put them in there carrying box Quote Link to post
theferreter 311
some ferrets dont even realise they have been picked up there in that much of a deep sleep Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Aye i was talking about 'new' ferrets. If the ferret doesnt know your smell or you, then i wouldnt grab it when asleep as it might wake up and freak a bit and bite out of instinct. My ferrets, knowing me, are fine to be picked up when asleep, and i have one that sleeps wierdly deeply, you can pick her up and talk to her, move her about and she looks dead, and then suddenly wakes up and looks very confused! Ideation 8,216
One trick is to smear some egg yolk on their belly, they get some intent trying o lick it off they dont notice the clipping. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
no matter what you nee to do to a ferret the handling is the same .... using your fore finger and thumb scruff them on the back of the neck and alow them to hang this doesnt hurt them but it does render them virtualy dead still allowing you to check teeth eyes ears nails etc quickly and efficiently. JPTfellterrier 65
thank you for the tips, I am still a little nervous of sticking my hand straight in there and my fella is going to show me how to go about it this weekend when hes home. Luckily these kills like to come to you, they will just climb out on to your arms. They really are very tame, the ladie i got them off was lovley and they were so quiet with her. I supose it is just like a dog really, takes you both time to get to know one anouther. They really are entertaining, had one like a hungry hippo this morning, she would pop out her bed, grab a bisquit and then reverse back in. How much do you all feed a day? Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
I have a 4 inch piece of wood along the top inside edge of their cage, serves as a barrier to stop them climbing oot Quote Link to post
