You think your so high and mighty coming on these sites saying you have hunted this here and that there with these dogs. It don't make you any better than anyone else and it don't mean you deserve more respect than anyone else. Your just a dog man like everyone else. In fact there are probably people on these sites with far more knowledge than you about dogs and hunting. The fact is mate pure salukis are crap and a lurcher is far superior wither you like it or not Quote Link to post

In fact there are probably people on these sites with far more knowledge than you about dogs and hunting. The fact is mate pure salukis are crap and a lurcher is far superior wither you like it or not What truth ? a saluki is the best dog IN ITS OWN ENVIROMENT, simple as that. High and Mighty ? Where do you get that from ? Yes, I have hunted all over the world, with different types of dogs in different enviroments. This thread was about SALUKIS hunting in ARABIA, where they are the best. I work a dog that has beddy/grey/deer/whippet in it now, as that is what I hope will do what I want in the circumstances I am now in. But to say all salukis are crap must bring a grin to the faces of most hare coursing match dog men. And yes, there are Many more people on here who have more experience/knowledge of working dogs than me, but by you replies, you are not one of them. Cheers. Quote Link to post
brock 11
you out cross the pure saluki's in this country because the last time i checked we were not in the desert with miles and miles of open land,we cross them to add a bit more speed, and give lurchers and greyhounds a lot more stamina,if they are that bad why do we see them sell for thousands, between coursing men. Quote Link to post
miles 227
Are greyhounds crap? deerhounds? whippets?bulldogs?collies etc? All these and more are used in lurcher breeding, does that make them crap? It,s like calling Afgans crap, well, western show bred Afgans are! The saluki is going the same way and the dogs you,ve no doubt seen are of this illk I must also concede that i have never seen a "pure" (k.C registered) saluki that has been quite a match for the very best match dogs( e.g Blondie, snowy, foxy, gazza) BUT i have seen pure salukis that are not far off,the saluki bitch that won the Temple Brewer against some of the best dogs in the country,a few weeks later was runner up in the Forley Cup and regularly took 4/5,s in the dead of winter,Knightellington Esmail killed hundreds of hares on sailsbury plain,Wilbers "star" had to be seen to be believed, fantastic animal(its on video) My own dog killed hares in the dead of winter not just on the fen,s and southport but the lancashire moors and over the fences of the yorkshire dales, not as good as the best saluki lurchers but not far off,i wish he was 2 years old again FACT, they are the only pure breed of dog that will regularly catch rather than just course hares I have seen many coursing bred salukis that are a million miles away from crap Yes, there are "crap" saluki,s out there like there are crap everything else, and under the K.C in this country things aint gonna get better  Victor Henderson brought a dog in that had killed over 40 gazzel and was a revalation on the coursing field, how many in the club used this outstanding dog? Non, nil silch The English middle class and the K.C got hold of the saluki and most,by no means all, have been bred for looks and not performance. The saluki is a middle eastern lurcher(there, i said it) bred for the conditions its running in,not all the middle east is sandy desert, and IMHO many of the dogs run pre ban  were salukis bred for English(British?) conditions, but thats a whole other thred,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Yes, the Bedowin or whoever can name the pedigrees of their dogs going back generations(pedigrees written in performance not some judges idea of conformation) but so can most of the saluki lurcher men,ask em how its bred an they,ll tell you!way back So ,yes ,there are some "crap" salukis, but only a fool would right them all off as crap Just out of interest Smoothrun what do you run? snoopdog 1,256
you seem like a well educated man in the world of running dogs smoothrun..i would like to here more about your views on the saluki... Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,804
Miles, you seem to put my point over a bit better than me. There are "crap" dogs of every breed, but to say "all salukis are crap" is ridiculous. I have never had the oppertunity to see the great salukis or saluki Xs coursing on the fens, apart from on video, but have seen them in their natural enviroment and was lucky enough to own one. I know for a fact people spend a lot of money importing saluki dogs and bitches to enhance the coursing blood in this country. For someone to say "all salukis are crap" simply shows they know nothing on the subject. Cheers. Quote Link to post
Meerihunter 7
Smoothrun you know all about Salukis to be making a statement like that. A good Saluki and can do everthing your lurcher can do and plenty your lurcher can't. Its as simple as that. If they are so crap why is it that from Eastern Europe to China and from Russia to north africa and india regional variations of Saluki's are the native sighthound forget your desert dogs these dogs, across the whole range hunt over just about every terrain you could imagine. These dog aren't there for fun they kept people alive. Thousands of years of breeding has produced crap dogs? yeah right. Lets here more about you and your wonderous lurchers? chartpolski 24,804
Just want to put up a couple of pics of a pure Beduin Saluki, that I owned and worked in the middle east. If this dog was "crap" I would have loved to see a better one!!! Cheers. Without the crude oil. Cheers. Edited January 30, 2007 by chartpolski Quote Link to post

weg 0
: try it before you knock it how many hares you killed in the desert in that kind of heat. salukis useless mmm like to see alot of other crosses fare so well out there back to that old saying [horses for coarses] exactly right Quote Link to post
Meerihunter 7
Exactly, I've seen my Saluki bitch running rabbits in the summer when my lurchers could hardly be bothered with walking! That is nothing to the heat out there, deep sand like that in the video is extremely tiring for the dogs and the hare just skims over the top. chartpolski 24,804
Hi, Meerihunter, I have what I consider a lurcher at the moment, Beddy/Grey X Deer/Grey-Whippet/Grey, and she is doing everything I want from her, but in the future, I'm looking for a black and tan Saluki or 3/4 saluki - !/4 Greyhound. I understand they will never be "all rounders", but I have a soft spot for them, I got my old saluki in the middle east at 6 months and had him 'till he was 17 years. Cheers. Quote Link to post
