Out on my own

Recommended Posts

Get yourself a good dog! I do a lot of ferreting on my own and couldn't/wouldn't do it without the mutt. Apart from marking, which is an obvious godsend! (i really do not understand how people can ferret without a marking dog? It must DO YOUR HEAD IN!!!) he is worth a couple of blokes around the holes. He marks the set and the hole which the rabbit/s are nearest to, and then when i net up i stick the ferret into this hole, usually meaning a reletivly fast bolt. Usually if there isnt an immediate bolt, i stand off the set, sometimes a few yards away from it (but with a view of the whole thing), with the dog at my feet, as the rabbit bounces around below he knows where it is and where its coming out and can scoot forward and pin it as it bolts, saving me and runnning and diving about. It also means that as i am dispatching/re-netting (with a foot in the hole) he can go and grab any more bolters. As well as the pleasure of watching the dog work, it also takes most of the stress and hardship out of ferreting solo. He's also handy for spotting ferrets that have come up and started to wander.

I have 2 staffordshire bull terriers, would they be any good :D , probably spend more time play fighting and smelling everything, pissing up every bush, and would probably want to lay down as soon as the novelty had worn off !!!

As long as they are safe with ferrets, take them a long, you never know what they might start doing, some staffs will mark, bush up rabbits and even make the odd catch. Even if they just barrel over and grab the rabbit in the net or scare rabbits back to ground, its a start. And they wont learn much in the house or kennel. Just make sure they are not going to eat the ferrets 100%
