Out on my own

Recommended Posts

Hi All, A friend took me out ferreting with him a few times , and i now have the bug!! Have managed to get permission from a mate who is a farm manager, So am going out on my own on sunday for the first time, items packed will include

1. 2 ferrets and carrying box.

2. Nets

3. spade

4. Mk3 finder and collar

5. Knife

6. Flask of coffee!

7. Mobile phone so the mrs can bug me about how much longer i will be!! ( can see it interfering with the ferret finder which might mean it will have to be kept switched off !!!!)

8. sweets/chocolate

Have i forgot anything or would anyone recommend i took anything else as all the above is all the lad i have been going with seems to take.

Thanks all,,,,,,, Jon.

Ferreting as a one man team can be a pain, managing nets, catching rabbits and keeping an eye on the ferret all at once can end up getting confusing.

The one thing I'd really recommend is that you survey each warren before ferreting. make sure that all exit holes are with-in realtive reach, and the ferret won't end up going somewhere that will be a pain to reach (under a mass of rocks, other side of a ditch, under a fence etc).

take your time no need to rush about even when you get bolters dont panick to much on getting the holes covered a badly set purse is as much use as no purse, try and stick to nice little warrens with 1/2 dozen holes or so above all just enjoy it

yes what HAYSTACK says

think you have just about covered every thing mate get urself a probe for finding the tunnels makes digging alot easier  and if you can dont be doing setts with loads of holes stick to setts that you can easily manage ;) there nothing worse mate being on your own and more rabbits bolt at the same time from different holes and you not being able to dispatch them on time and them wriggling free :wallbash: anyway atb tomorrow

Hi All, Thanks for the advice, the secateurs was a good idea! i found a set with 9 holes so did that one, i only got the 1 rabbit which i had to dig 5ft for!! no bolters to start with but had just got the rabbit out that the ferret had been scratching at, and on the opposite side of the hedge one bolted but got free and ran off as i couldnt quite get there fast enough or didnt notice it soon enough as was digging, gutted the rabbit and dropped it off at the wifes auntys on the way home for her tea tomorrow night, so happy all round!!

Cheers Jon.
