Advice needed! best lurcher for my needs?

Alright im new to this forum, so here goes! Im finally getting my first lurcher after working with my colleges dogs on the farm for a few years. Just wanted some advice on what would be the best cross?? im working mainly flat grass land, with quite alot of hedgerows and cover. My main Quarry is rabbits, although wouldnt mind a run on the odd hare (if visiting Ireland of course . . .). I have no interest in bigger quarry like foxes. The dog also needs to be trainable in the main commands. so guys, what advice/crosses you got for me??

yeah i was thinking about something down the collie/whippet/grey line but in what proportions?

it depends on the proportion of rabbits to hares your hunting. more hare then you want more greyhound, more rabbits the you want more whippet, a nice allrounder thats good on hares would probably be half greyhound, quarter collie, quarter whippet, but for you as your mainly hunting rabbits you could probably do with half wippet etc. its mainly up to you and personal preference

i would say 1/4 collie 3/4 grey or colliexgreyxsalukixgrey, as this x will still have enough brain, good nose, and pleny fast for all quarry It will be good on rabbits , and give a good show on a hare just what you want.!

and theres more what would be more than capable to do the job you want ... instead of looking a certain cross why not just look at differant litters and choose a dog you like ,dont just look at one type

Like bird says I think a collie x grey / saluki x grey would be a good choice for you but if you cant find one you like and your fields are quite small with lots of headges etc then a beddy whippet or beddy whippet x greyhound should do you a good service mate.

Beddy lurchers have long since been proven as cracking little lamping dogs especialy in smaller fields with headge rows and cover.Big harted little fellas and the ones that i have seen give their all mate.

I would probaly go for one with some grey hound in it if I were thinking about hares mate but a beddy whippet would certainly put up a good account for its self on the right terrain.

I think a lot depends on the type of person that you are.If you are like me and get a pup 6/8 weeks old and plan on keeping it for life than in my opinion and its an opinion that I have formed through my personal expereances which are maybee limited because I keep all my dogs for life.The best cross I have ever had is the SALUKI/GREYHOUND.I have one at the moment .I also have a greyhound/collie and have had other collie/deerhound/greyhound crosses.I remember reading about the saluki,greyhound in several books and articals,stock chasers,disobedient,dont try.I took a chance and bought a saluki/greyhound pup.There is no question about it she is buy far the best hunting dog I have ever owned.She was 6 weeks old when we got her and is kept in the house with our collie/greyhound.She is the most loving,obedient and game dog that I have ever owned.She is dedicated to me and my family,funny with strangers and other dogs,these might be seen as faults if you are the type who changes or swops dogs and if you are this type then I would definately advise against getting this cross.Just my honest opinion,good luck whichever cross you get.
