tinman3 3
some good tips up there, one i will add is take a old rucksack with you, quick chop kill and in the backpack, spare net one then back on it! good stuff! Quote Link to post
The one 8,481
Nice its easy to kill a rabbit when you know how ,Ive never liked chopping at them it looks so amateurish and usually bruises all the meat to the shoulders If you get a burrow thats over grown you can make so much noise cleanering it, that the rabbits dont bolt ,its easier to net the clear burrows each side of it and just drop a ferret in and back netting the rabbits Quote Link to post

Joe67 239
lol am getting there,i chucked the rabbit in whole beside the 2 hobs early on,they were at it for a while but when i checked hadnt eaten much as i expected so i gave it to the jill for abit.when yous feed your ferrets rabbit do you put it in whole like i did or do you cut it open first?also how long can it be left in there before it needs bined? Joe67 239
they are eating it now,how long can i leave the rabbit in the hutch for before it needs to be binned? gonna take the jill out tomorrow for a wee bit for the first time, see how she gets on Quote Link to post
pipa 299
i always hold them upside down with there back legs and give them a downward chop on the back of the neck,.... wrks everytime for me....tried the pushing the neck back! but with there back legs free they scratch youre hands like mad, and ive had some pretty deep cuts from them,as for bruising?? think youre going to get it either way breaking its neck?? Joe67 239
I took the jill out this morning for about 3 hours, tryed two burrows(one from other day) and had no luck,i dont know if its because they were empty or the jill wasnt intersted but she wouldnt stay in those two.I then found another burrow with about nine holes close to each other,i stoped had a look about them and heard movement. So i netted them up and sent her in,she was in there for about 5 minutes and came back out,i then put her into another hole, she was in there for a fair bit of time then i could hear alot of movement so she was either chasing a rabbit or trying to eat one,few minutes later she showed up again then as i lifted the net for her she went back in,this time she was in there for ages!Once again i could hear alot of movment below and after a good few mins a rabbit bolted and hit the net,i managed to get the rabbit sorted but was suprised the jill showed up at another hole,i expected her to follow the rabbit out like the hobs done. It took abit longer but she managed to get one in the end,she is still young and hopefully gets better after a few more times out. Quote Link to post
The one 8,481
Maybe because shes young , and the more often you get her out she will follow the rabbit right out to the burrow mouth .You need them to do that in a big burrow or there only moving them from layer to layer . Given time it sounds like shes going to come good your worst enemy now is time as the seasons drawing to a close Quote Link to post
tjones3862 3,423
Remember am new to ferreting, some mistakes were made but ive learnt from them. I decided last night i was gonna take the 2 hobs out this morning and see how they get on,i didnt know the last owner so didnt know if these ferrets were good workers or not.I left the hoose about 7am and walked across to small woods not far away,i soon came across the first set of burrows holes and started to put down the nets, then i came across a mixi rabbit, any other rabbit would have bolted by now but this sat there for about 5 minutes while i put nets down, once i got really close it bolted. Heres the mixi: Uploaded with ImageShack.us So after netting all the holes it was time to send in bud and wiser,i put bud in first then put wiser in further along, wiser didnt do much at first i could see him sitting just inside the burrow hole for 1-2 mins, while every few minutes i seen bud sticking his head out one burrow then going back in.At this point i thought i had one worker and one lazy fooker.Wiser later disapeared then then not long after one rabbit bolted out a burrow,WTF i was sure i covered them all!I still couldnt find were this rabbit bolted from and then bud got stuck in the net, justas i tryed to help he got free and went back in,and then guess what, another rabbit bolted,i later found the burrow under lots of deadwood next to atree.I spent some more time there then the hobs didnt want to go back in so i moved on. I found the next burrow not far away,as i moved closer to start putting the nets down one rabbit bolted,i then netted all the burrow holes then double checked i never missed any this time then put the 2 hobs in,few minutes later one a rabbit hit one of the nets,i picked the rabbit up but it was tangled in the net with wiser stuck to it,wiser wouldnt let go of the rabbit for abit then finaly did,i then grabed the rabbit from behind the neck and grabed its back legs, steched. At this point i thought the rabbit was dead so i put it down on the ground, the fooker got up and bolted!I tryed this burrow abit longer then the hobs lost interst so i moved on. Not long after i found a small burrow with about 4 holes so tryed that, after a while the hobs refused to go back in. I decided id try one more burrow then head home,i netted the burrow holes then sent in the hobs. After 5-10 mins a rabbit bolted and hit the net. This one was alittle easyer to free from the net, this time i was sure i wouldnt make the same mistake twice,i grabed the rabbit by the back of neck and grabed the back legs and streched it,thought i heard it cracking then i put it down, then the fooker bolted! So in the end i was happy with both hobs,i had doubts about one at first but was proved wrong later, infact they done there job was me who fooked up with the rabbits/netting,i know what some of you might say about the rabbits,i made a mistake, next time it wont happen. very funny and a very good report atb tj Quote Link to post
jakk 6
I turned a piece of wood into a mini baseball bat shape about 3/4 of a foot long I drilled the end (the one you don't hold) and got my old man to fill it with lead now when I'm ferreting or longnetting I grab the rabbit, put my foot over the hole, hit it on the back of the head (atlas joint), throw it into the field complete with net (within view so you don't forget it!) and use a new net out of my pocket to net the hole up. I can neck using my hands but only do it when I have to, all the best, Jakk Quote Link to post
bscott4rnt 0
I find it much easier to take a ferreting stick with me (a 30cm stick) and hold them by the back legs and crack them one on the back of the head. Saves saw knuckes and suffering rabbits! Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
I have to say, it's good to hear a young lad learning from his mistakes and gaining good experience, makes a change from some of the cock tools you hear thinking they know it all or starting out by just buying a bull cross and going lamping for foxes straight away.
