Half a day ferreting and pigeon shooting

Recommended Posts

I took a guy off the site (unlacedgecko) for a couple of hours pigeon shooting this morning and got the crew to come down as well so they could do a bit of ferreting too. It was the first time out pigeon shooting for him and was mainly to get the feel for it more than anything. We all met up at mine and drove to the farm just a couple of minutes away and while the lads set off ferreting we set up for the pigeons. I had been there a few days previous and the 2 main areas of activity were the places we set up, I was also in constant communication with the lads just to check on their progress with the rabbits. By the time we had started seeing pigeons they had bagged 16 rabbits so things looked rosy, we had to wait a while for the birds but they started to come to my magnet in the odd ones and twos.

I was shooting steel shot and the birds would be going to someone for the hawks, lead would poison them and although they cost much more they hit well and drop them like stones. The birds were not as obliging for unlacedqecko so I got him to come up near me and hopefully get more shots but by this time they seemed to have fled the area. He had an appointment just after lunch time and we had decided to call it a day by lunch earlier in the day. Nice guy and if anyone near by has room for a tag along at any time I'm sure he would be glad of the day out, I will be taking him again soon.

By the time we had packed up the lads were about ready too, Byron (vaseline kid) had a footy match and was not willing to give it a miss for a few more rabbits, sad or what.

They had found it hard going though after the first 16 easy rabbits they had dig after dig and some 5-6 footers, glad I was shooting. It must be the earliest end to the day we had ever had but you have to be fair to the lad.

Seeing as it was half a day the bag was much less than normal but all the same the farmer was chuffed, but keen for us to clear a few more before we stop for the season.

A bag of 26 rabbits and 36 pigeons for a few hours work not to be sniffed at I suppose.

If you count the rabbits they will show a couple missing, they are in the cage as always!!!!

Getting very close now mate, when the digging becomes unbearable we will stop, maybe a week or two if we are lucky. Got some foxes, rats and pigeons to sort out then, its a hard life..........................honest.
