An afternoon out with Pianonman.....

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the kind comments, fellas. I've just emailed the pics of the day to SEMole who's kindly offered to post them for me. I can down load to Photobucket no problems but I just can't get them back on to the site, I just get an error message each time I try. Hopefully I'm getting a much newer machine from a friend in a week or two so it's bye bye to my very elderly Dell :boogie:

That'd be great, Si. Give us a shout and I'm sure we can sort something out, mate. Be good to meet up

Thanks again, lads and a VERY big thanks to Simon for another top day's shooting.

Cheers!!!! :signthankspin:

Cheers Andy.   It's a bit bloody annoying when it's fine and mild around my house but, out in the fields it starts blowing up a freshening wind. Still, that's what we get to shoot in so, we have to

Das Jaeger!

Now Gentlemen. How's this for a place to shoot? This field corner is where I do all my testing, zeroing and warm up shooting prior to hunting into the woodland beyond or into the fields around here. Or just self training when I'm on my own and need a bloody good work out. To be able to shoot extremely accurately is a God-given gift but it needs attention to keep it sharp. I'm facing into the breezes which almost always reliably blow from this direction. In the summer this spot will teem with rabbits and the trees will be full of woodies as the corn crop grows through.

My rifle here is my beloved WEIHRAUCH HW80 .22 FAC. with her Simmons Whitetail Classic 4.5-14X40mm AO. Both are 11 years old and work together as beautifully as they did brand new. The rifle in the foreground is Andy's phenominal Diana 52 .177 sidelever. Make no mistake these rifles are incredible, PCP-accurate springers.

Top pic No.1 Is me shooting my prone style. No matter how heavy a spring rifle is, this beany seat makes a fantastic dampening arm rest that keeps everything supported and comfortable. Note position of hands. Nothing grippy or tight. I'm lying just snug on my right side keeping my (not inconsiderable) weight off my diaphragm. Everything is relaxed and unhurried. Just as it should be. You may notice the fallen tree in the wood, leaning to right. From this corner to that tree the range is 42 metres. A 30 metre zero will accurately cover this corner and enable me to take out any rabbit entering this field from along the tree-line. Just a few yards behind where Andy took this pic there is plenty of Hawthorn hedgerow dividing the next field. This gives fantastic cover when hunting here. This field is just at the start of my vast permission. All the woodland behind me here and for miles to the right of this spot, is all mine to shoot.

The 2nd pic down Of me shooting out into the field...

The telegraph pole out to earthbank is a good 80+metres away. We put the frying pan at the base of this pole and we were hitting it fine before the winds freshened and started blowing the shots off true course. I've switched to the tiny spect of light stone you can see near the top of the field. The earth bank was created by the quarry there. There's a bloody hell of a drop off a limestone face just over that banking! There are a lot of fresh rabbit holes and runs appeared at its base since we were here a couple of weeks ago. The tree at the extreme right of the pic is the corner. I've taken thousands of rabbits at that one spot alone over the years. This is the very spot where I shot my first rabbit with my dad's .22 rimfire back when I was 8 years old. Down there and off to right is where we headed off to hunt, along the quarry edge and the woods beyond.

3rd Another pic of me, prone shooting.

4th pic Me with bloody silly grin. Well, trust me this place has been a cure for my blues all my life! By the way, I got this lovely Swedish Army parka new for under twenty quid at an Army surplus shop a few weeks ago. Does a lovely job of keeping me warm over my British Army DPM jacket.

5th pic. Andy's pidgeon and Diana 52 rifle. His was the only bag retrieved from the woods this day. He went on to get a few more after this but, only emerged with two.

There you go, a few bits of my permission and me! :bye:

Thanks for pics and your company Andy, and help posting them Moley!

Good photos Andy bud.

Is that you or Simon?

I'd say Simon as the person is shooting left handed.

Nice pair of rifles there lads.

I'm sure they would look better sat in my gun cabinet LOL.

Y'know. I just might have an Epiphany, Road-To-Damascus moment with that R10 of yours Si.

When I was picking up my HW77 at my mate's gunshop, there was a guy picking up a left-handed R10. It's bolt sounds like a bolt should (just the right level of clunk click. oooo I love that!) and it was filled and charged up in a jiffy.

I don't mind telling you I had a little salivating in my mouth when I saw it. Really nice walnut stock on it too....

...And you've had all this lovely Tench tuning work on yours...

NO!! I'M NOT SELLING ME 80! :icon_eek:

Might let a very tasty TX200 .22 rifle go for it though...

Thanks for that, Mole  and thanks for the comments, lads.

The pigeon in the last pic was the only one I could retrieve sadly. I'm not familiar with the lay of the land yet and three woodies and a ferral fell from trees that were overhanging a very steep rocky gully. I could see all four dead on the ground but I couldn't get to them...

There's no pics of me as I didn't want to spoil anyones dinner!! :icon_redface::laugh:

Cheers.

Hi Simon,

This is what she looks like now after the Tench work on her.

Shes a ultra accurate carbine now.

Most of the work is internal though and cant be seen only witnessed when shot.

Now I have to say...

That looks seriously shootable.

Si, I can see why you must absolutely love this rifle. Looks very compact and purposeful. I guess this has a roll-over comb from what I can see here? Still, should be able to fire a round or two off at a target when you bring her up to my permission. Scope looks like a Hawke 6-18x44 Sr12 model.

Nice one mate. She'll make a nice addition to MY gun cabinet with a proper lefty stock!

LOL Simon

Yes she would make your already beautiful HW and AA rifles look even better mate.

Yes she is a seriously good rifle to shoot now and very compact with perfect balance.

Tench has done a wonderful job on her.

The r10 straight out the box is very accurate mate ne mind what other people have said about them in regards to accuracy.

Mine was deadly accurate straight from the shop and my whole first 2 DVDs were filmed with my r10 and HW100KT in there straight out the box format and i made plenty of humane 50 and 55 metre head shots.

Now getting that same accuracy as before is just lots easier for me and the rifle almost shoots herself.

I actually get annoyed with myself if I miss with her as I know its me and not the rifle every time.

Yes the scope is a Hawke Airmax 6-18x44 AO model with the SR12 reticule buddy, your right.

Its a very nice scope and if calibrated well like mine is it ensures pellet on pellet from 10 to 55 metres if you as a shooter do your part.

You can defo try her in a few weeks time pal.

 I'll show you all how miss a target good and proper!!!!

Not me, Davy. It's just nice to be somewhere I can do this sort of thing and it's always more fun when not alone, ain't it.

When I'm on the estate I've always got the keeper with me so practice is very limited and I'm normally carrying a sack of grain or tools and sh*t so the gun tends to be slung on my back ready for the odd squizzer or whatever. The farm where I shoot has a farmer's wife who's anti shooting so I've got to keep out of sight, out of her mind and keep the noise well down. The only place where I can do what I like is over an hours drive away so I can't get there too often....

Simon has a cracking permission and it's only 20 mins drive away from my gaff. He's a top bloke and I count myself very lucky to be able to share his shoot  and be able to play about more with the rifles.

Cheers.
