Rabbithunter 456
im not big into the fishing so excuse me if the question's sound stupid what are the best sized hook's to use on sea bass & whats the best bait to use, freshworm? cheers Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
It all depends when you intend to fish my friend. If you are fishing off the beach then I would use peeler crab, or if I am fishing from rocks then I would lure fish. Bass are well worth they time you have to put into catching them, they fight like a devil. Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
i would be fishing off the beach mate, so what size hook's Quote Link to post
Guest karlos
We've used 6s off the "beach" by silloth and the buggers ave stayed on fine like! Quote Link to post
buckshot 53
i,ve had some nice bass in the gill net over the years Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
i would not know how to rig up & set a gill net, so i'll stick to simple methods Quote Link to post
Alhoy 0
fish for bass often here.......usually use 3/0...or 4/0's size hook, but needs to be a strong made hook..or the blighters will bend it..peeler crab....be it shore crab..or velvet crab...are top baits...mind them velvets fight back,,,lol...regardless of where you fish for them I would always carry a few lures ,,,have a cast or 50 with them....if can get hold of any live sandeel is a cracking bait.... tight lines Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
I think there is quite a bit of leeway on the hook size as they have such a big gob. I agree on the peeler crab or maybe a strip of mackeral or sandeel... both basic but they also flash in the water which i think helps as bass are very inquisitive. I think the ragworms etc are better for the flatties but thats just me. Spearfishing is the way forward mate I get loads on the south Devob / Cornist coast in the spring / summer. :thumbs-up: Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
right i have the hooks. so is peeler crab the best bait or will the normal fresh worm do? if using the worm should i attach something shiny onto the line (seen it before but havent a clue of the name, told you im a novice when it comes to fishing) looking for a good weekend on the bass so i want all the best gear, expense not important as my mate is buying the gear obviously any profit made i'll cover his costs before splitting Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
should i just buy a mackerel or two from the game dealers and use the flesh for bait? Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
Mackeral are cheap as chips (boom boom) and you can pick them up anywhere. They stay on the hook well because of the skin... nothing worse than getting nipped whislt carefully mounting a peeler only to have the bugger fall off as you cast. Always get a couple more that you think you'll need otherwise you'll be pulling limpits off rocks after a few hours. Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
i'll give it a go with the mackerel then instead of digging the bait hows that longnet serving you localyokel? Quote Link to post
tiny tim 22
use fresh worm with size 2/0 hooks..bigger if using crab...fresh bait is the secret...i,ve never caught a bass om mackeral cant get through the doggies...got to agree the gill net takes some beating Quote Link to post
woodga 170
typical of you anything for nothing as long as some one else pays the costs we havent forgotten about you just yet Quote Link to post
Rabbithunter 456
typical of you anything for nothing as long as some one else pays the costs we havent forgotten about you just yet jumping to conclusions again there woody... My mate spent about £7 on hooks, i at a guesstimate have used £5 on my own line, I will then use 2 gallons of diesel approx £8 if im right, to get out there, so if we're talking level i have "spent" £15 where my mate has spent £7, yet im still going to give him his cut....... get your facts sorted out before you butt in.
