028butlerboy 0
This is my latest natural slingshot, its made from a fork i obtained while out for a mooch a while back!! I will bring you through the steps i took to make it!! First up, a spot of prunning: Then i got it home, removed the bark and knobs with knife and rasp then microwaved it to remove moisture in the wood (3 times in a sealed bag, 40 secs each time and left to cool for 10mins between zaps) not necessary on deadfall: Measured it up to my desired length and feed it to the bandsaw: After that i cut out the V in the fork (not necessary but i like it): After rounding with a rasp, I then drew around my fingers and filed out the grooves: After going through 40, 120, 400, 600, 800, 1200 grit sandpaper and doing the fork grooves it looked like this, Smooth...(note the grooves in the forks, these help secure the bands to the forks when tied on) Finishing with 3 coats of tru-oil and 2500 grit sandpaper, banded up with double theraband black, this is the finished piece... taadaa Those last pics don't really do it justice, but i can truely say that its finish is like glass!! Thanks for looking guys and gals, hope to see a few more of these on here in future!! They are under estimated hunting weapons when it comes to dispatcing small game and vermin!! 028butlerboy 0
Some nice forks , when you cut them from the tree ,do you dry them out first ? I will sometimes cut and leave to dry (cover cut ends with epoxy before leaving to dry to prevent checking), but i find that microwaving them dries them well enough for finishing!!
