I REMEMBER THE 80S VIVIDLY. DEEP FRYED RABBITS N CHIPS HARE CASSAROLES AND TOTTYS N PEAS GAME PIES. MENU WAS VERY VARIED BACK THEN.AND HUNGER WAS GOOD KITCHEN I STILL FEED THE FAMILY WITH KILLS NOW AND THEN AND THEY ENJOY IT SUMMIT DIFFERENT. I REMEMBER WHEN THEY SHUT OUR STEELWORKS EVERY TOM/DICK/HARRY HAMMERED THE PARKS/ RIVERS/HILLS AND DECEMATED THE PLACE WHICH HAD PLENTY GAME/FISH. I know my grandad lived through hard times and he was a well known poacher. Got most of his game using snares. Any well known poacher that folk knew about, would of lasted, ten fecking minutes.... And the truth of the matter is (was)....that to kill a large quantity of saleable game,..(a lurcher dog stands out like a sore thumb),..and although not quite as romantic a notion,..facts are,..the preferred choice of a full -time freelancer, would of been,..a silenced .22... Obviously he wasn't well known then. Besides, see the photos you put up of you having to eat carcases, why didn't you just sell your expensive jacket or braclet or walking stick Do you have any photos hwere your actually eating the carcas? Have any of our members actually genuinely used a lurcher to help them through tough times, by putting food on the table and perhaps the game dealers/butchers trays...... good question , i havent and hopefully will never have too rely on dogs, we all moan but it will never be as hard as it once was. my dogs support there selfs and ferrets and some times the butchers, i suppose im lucky lol Quote Link to post
3 Turns 326 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Share Posted February 28, 2011 REMEMBER MY DAD TELLING ME DURING WW2 YOU WERE ONLY ALLOCATED SO MANY S/G CARTIDGES AND THEY WOULD FEED THE DUCKS TO GET THEM ALL CLOSE TOEGETHER AND POP AS MANY AS POSS WAE 1 SHOT.ALSO CATCH DUCKS/GEESE ON FROZEN LOCHS WAE PEAS/PORK FAT THREADED ON THE LINE USEING FISHING RODS. iworkwhippets 12,757 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Share Posted February 28, 2011 Brings back some happy memmories does this post, born in the 40s, i used to collect a greyhoundxwhippet on my way home from school from an owd lady, it never went through the door unless i took it out, then borrowed pedigree manchester terrier from my mate, both cracking working dogs, missed nowt, the manchester was the best hare dog ive ever owned,so off we went and i can see my mothers face even now, light up cos id gotten a bag full of bunnies, good days the days when i shared 1 egg twixt me n my father fer breakfast, no sugar for cups of tea, im still at it now with my whippets, not long been back home out working them. jill katie n nell and shag the ferret Quote Link to post

poacher3161 1,766 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Share Posted February 28, 2011 Yes the 84 85 miners strike as i received only £20 a week to keep me a wife and a 3 year most of my lamping and roost shooting was carried out alone must admit the roost shooting earned more money as pheasants back then i could get £ 3 a brace for no problem living like this did only last from sept to febuary as we then went back to work in march and the months before september were very hard times.I admit it did kill some of the enjoyment in going out and just being happy wether you caught anything or not. Its been far too long since a snoopdog post has discussed the old length of rope again ive proved it twice 1 hour 60lb of fresh meat on the table ..me and a lad of here split up he took his dog and a lamp we met up after an hour he came back with nothing and i was struggling to carry mine ... and 50 quid up to... .... STUNTMAN 552 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Share Posted February 28, 2011 Sim- I like this thread and all the replies Luckly I've never had to but the closest I've come was I had quite a few dogs and little money to feed them at one point in my life and they fed themselfs for the most part. I bought a farm a few years back and I had a collie dog run loose for 7 months and I swear she never hit the commercial dog food. Every morning she had something laying at her feet knawing on it But one thing here in the States I see allot is nobody ever really keeps or breeds dogs that if thier life would have to depend on it they could survive some day me included. Its always some other agenda creeps up into someones breeding plans. Quote Link to post
