chartpolski 23,474
I'm probably "one of the more mature members" Simo's on about ! I remember times long before the miners strike, as bad as that was. I never NEEDED to hunt to get meat for the table, but we allways ate what we caught. What we didn't eat was given away to people who did need it,old people, people with big families, people out of work, etc. Still get asked by people for a rabbit, pheasant, trout, etc. The old days of hunger in this country, have, thankfully, gone.. but nowt wrong with giving an owld lad or lass a rabbit or bit of venison now and again !! (or even swapping them for a "beer voucher" to some of the younger lads !! LOL !!). Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post
micky 3,325
I love the romantic notion of the lurcher feeding the family but can i ask, and this is probably better aimed at lurcher owners who kept them a few years ago. Have any of our members actually genuinely used a lurcher to help them through tough times, by putting food on the table and perhaps the game dealers/butchers trays...... In the bad old days, when times were genuinely hard for a lot of people , that the good old dog would been shot ,long before it had put to much food on the table, never mind about the butchers or game dealers,as Chalkwarren said ,22 . I'll agree that Thatcher f****d the working man, (and not in a nice way !! LOL !!), but come on...you can't equate the 's with the 50's !!!! There was tough times after the war, but the 's there was no rationing, people wern't starving, we all poached and collected scrap, but there was no way we would go as hungry as people did in the 50's, 60's, etc !! Cheers. Quote Link to post
Paid 935
Good thread. Never needed too yet, but always hunt for meat, the sport is just a lucky bonus. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I'm skint and spend my money on other shit, so a very large chunk of my meals involve fresh caught game or frozen game, and lots of it is passed about for favours, swaps etc and the odd bit of cash. Why waste money on food when its all over the shop lying, hopping, swimming, growing etc about, and its free!!!! Quote Link to post

Cheers. I remember my old grandpa, with old habits and the like, still looked through dumps for clothes. He pretty much survived by stealing farmers vegetables and snaring fur and feather. It wasn't a choice and if you think these real poachers would waste money on pellets etc when a stick or a piece of wire can do the same job, you are sadly mistaken. Or maybe my grandpa was poorer than the poor down south, who knows. Quote Link to post
