Gun shy ?

Recommended Posts

Up until recently my 2yr old male springer has been working like it says on the tin,I was out shooting at the end of Jan with 2 mates and for some reason after a few shots he started hanging back and would'nt hunt out and then refused to pick up a woodcock ,he was put back in the wagon and has'nt been out with me since.

I don't know what's going on so he's been temporarily retired.

Any advice more than welcome.

Firstly have you taken him out on his own since he went weird to see how he behaves? Something may have spooked him when he was in the bushes or he had a bad experience with the gun on that day. Not all dogs will pick woodcock i would try him on feather dummies again to see how he reacts to them.

If he has gone gun shy, i personally would take him back to basics and take him near to a clay shoot and as his confidence grows, move him closer until he has no fear of the noise of the gun.It will take a bit longer than it would if he was a pup but it can be sorted.
