could the lurcher

Recommended Posts

not wanting kennels full of breed specific dogs i use my lurchers for everything including retriving shot game, even in water, in the pigeon hide and rough shooting i expect them to bush and retrieve. i admit they havent the style of a spaniel or a lab but the do the job to the standard i require and forefill all that a lurcher should do aswell. they cost nowhere near a gundog to buy and in most cases are easier to train and tend to have a longer working life. i have no inclination to field trial or pay to shoot driven game so in short why would i want a one track pony of a gundog?

as mine are to,well nearly lol,but it was a general question i suppose not personel requirement if you know what i mean

most gundogs are purchased as a shooting accessary buy those who have to keep up with the set

Sounds like you have little experience of ACTUAL gun dogs.

A Lurcher will do a gundogs job better than a gundog can do a Lurchers job !..... But a Lurcher will never be better than a gundog at a gundogs job !! Hope that makes sense !! LOL !!   Cheers.

cannae imagine 12 lined up toffy nosed snobs standing at pegs wae a skinny lurcher at each a theyr feets

I say, how rude *what, what, what* my father lord Charles-Montgomery Harrington III could buy and sell the "lurcher" section *what, what, what*

For a laugh I entered my Lurcher in a little gun dog trial at a Country Fair over in Toll Bar Cumbria about a dozen years ago. When I first asked if I could enter a lurcher in the competition the looks on the faces of the blokes running it was a picture; they were laughing and smirking and happy to take my quid... until it did the first retrieve! :feck:

Their jaws dropped when it sat to heel and then blasted out of the seat to do the double retrieve, bringing the dummys straight back to hand and in a time that made their Spaniels and Labs look silly. All went well with my dog tearing a new backside in the times set by the other dogs until it came to the 'Leave'! I had to stop my dog from chasing a simulated rabbit lure (a proper gun dog should be able to leave for the guns) and there was no way my dog was having any of that, he was having great fun in the trials and chasing rabbits is what he does best... so chase he did! :D I couldn't knock him and just p1ssed myself laughing as he dragged the rabbit skin back to hand, despite their being a great big piece of elastic stretched tight as a drum back across the field.

My dog was an all-rounder and would happily play these games and was used by me when I was pigeon shooting from a hide but as for him doing what a proper gun dog does, there isn't any comparison to what a half-decent gun dog can do but it's fun having a go. :D

How does that work then on a shoot day of the 20 beaters there are about 15-18 dogs the pickers up account for another 20 and the guns maybe bring 2, I should say more gun dogs are owned by beaters and picker ups (normal working folk) than guns.

If lurcher's could be better than gundogs at their given job then I am sure we would all be using them but the fact is they aren't. If you can show me a lurcher that breeds true to type hunts any cover, retrieves, is rock steady, easy to train, has real nose and has the stamina to do that day in day out July through February then I stand corrected. It is just a case of horses for courses.

P.s if you think that field trials is a true representation of a working gundog then you are wrong.

Fkn hell...... I've got a big gun..... but it isn't as big as the gun i used to have..... but even thats not as big as the big big gun i'm gonna get....... f*****g hate reading about bloody guns!!! If I wanted to read about guns i'd be on the shooting section!!! Your thinly vailed reference to lurchers doesn't wash with me  If i'm being honest, a lurcher is wasted being used to catch injured birds which is enevitable from shooters.... A lurcher is all that is required, no guns involved

theirs allways jobs for all dogs and i don,t think it will ever change and ever should regardless of breed ,

Can't realy agree with that, mate ! Everything is continualy evolving, even dogs ! Just look at the coursing dog, the Saluki Hybrid is a relativly modern phenomenon, but is generaly accepted as the best hare coursing dog in the world, now !

Cheers.

Thats true, I used to watch crufts and see these wee fluffy terrier types prancing and the commentator would say.... this dog was once used for badgers!!! :icon_eek: I know its a bad example cos I personally hate the kennel club but you know what I mean and at the very least, I do lol.

yeah mate what they mean is, 'before we got hold of this breed and turned it into a useless inbred imitation of what it once was... it was used for badgers.'

So when we say lurchers we are lumping all running dogs together, lets narrow it down to say a first x collie/greyhound. I had one who knew when she was out lurchering so to speak and was well trained and bright enough to know when out shooting/beating. She as good as any gundog I met and was a country mile in front of most. It is possible but to be honest well beyond the needs or dare I say it capabilities of most lurchermen.
