New pup (saluki)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys an gals. Getting a new pup end of next month (fingers crossed), had running dogs before long time ago now 4-5 years back.

Was really thinking about getting a pure saluki my first dog was a saluki grey then had a bull grey.

Wanting a dog for stamina and good staying power some big rabbits round us :whistling: :whistling: if you get what i mean.

I have heard off some people to stay well clear too hard to train ect ect.

Just wanted to know other peoples thoughts and your experiances of owning a dog like this.

Cheers for any help you can give me as i"m in to minds what to get.

Yer true mate jus wanted other peoples views. That saluki grey i had was class i was only 14 when i had her (28 now)

But didnt no weather or not 2 throw the rule book out the window if ya get me, change dosent do any harm or could it with summat like this.

To be honest i was on some old school hare coursing vids on you tube watching them work class is not the word.

Or are they more for the major major experienced guys amongst us???

i got my self a saluki pup here with just a dash of collie and a dash of whippet in her.

she aint stupid at all. 13 ish weeks, sits and stays, near enough house trained, go gets in her cage when i tell her to go to bed, knows how to push my buttons!, just say starting to retrieve.

im not pushing her at all, done very little work with her.

i would think theres dogs of ever breed who will be hard work to train, my bull is the most intelligent dog ive ever ever had but you have to use an iron fist with him! the saluki the more im nice to her the more she rewards me.

heres my little girl.

Well, I took on the responsibility of a pure Sal in october last year!

First dog Iv'e taken on since I was a kid!

He is, I must admit, a bit of a handfull for a new dog handler, as far as listening is concerned, but treat them well, dont be rash with them, NEVER HIT THEM!! They hold grudges.

Gain their trust from an early age and dont let them down. A pure Sal will become a dog to be proud of!

He or She, will stay on the job as long and probably longer than any others, as long as you get them fit!

Dont overdoe it too quick at first.

Watch their legs, they are spindly, and they got a tendancy to damage themselves as they are more interested in what they are chasing than whats under them.

They were bred as hunting dogs for the desert and dunes, so well suited if you got soft ground to cover.

Gradients are no problem, Aladdin proved that to me many a time.

As you know, Sal/Grey X is a good cross, but I think some people rather a cross with a non long dog, such as a collie etc, for the brain part.

I might be, and probably am, wrong!

But thats what iv'e been led to belive!

Dont dismiss the Pur Sal altogether mind!

I wouldnt do without Aladdin now.

We are both learning together!

I've got a pure bred saluk bitch who is just coming up to 7 months she's had a few bunnies I had her out today walking about while I was flushing with a few of the lads and took to it like a duck to water.

I had heard a lot of mixed storys about pure salukis so I thought I'd try them for myself and to be fair the only thing I can complain about is she's a bit timred but she's getting better every day. So I'd have no worries about a pure bred saluki again going of what I've experienced so far. I know where there's a litter of pure bred salukis all kc registered who are 7 weeks so if you are interested pm me and I'll pass your number on the the lad
