You have to keep them in small groups with one cock, even then the hens may try to kill each other and the cocks if it takes their fancy. They eat mountains of food, (costs a fortune) and produce mountains of waste. If there is a way they can kill themselves, they will find it Outdoors with shelter in the summer but in the real cold winter you would have to keep them indoors/ in a shed. You cannot let them free range, they will disappear, so would have to be in an enclosure with a roof. They are good layers though, usually an egg a day when the light is long enough. I have a pair of them at the mo, had more but they are more hassle than enough, my pair are a canny couple, quite tame (for quail) and live in with the young chickens. They can be kept in doors or outside, i keep mine outside in my big garage. in a 7 foot long run by 3ft.(Height & width) its massive. I have a breeding ratio of 1 cock too seven hens. although if you want them for just eatting eggs, you dont a cock bird. There easy to keep, i feed mine on a of turkey & chick crumbs, millet, wild bird seed. bread, greens. Moll - You dont have to keep them in small groups, Ive never known 2 hens to kill each other, but 2 cock birds will. true they eat s**t lots of food, and Poop loads lol, what you feeding yours on moll? Millet 4,497 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Share Posted February 26, 2011 , Ive never known 2 hens to kill each other, I have not known hens kill each other either but i have had to finnish the odd one of after they started fighting and pecked eyes and ear holes out,and when they do take a dislike to one certain hen it is usualy gang attacked and if they have nowhere to hide they can substain a lot of damage. francolin 449 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Share Posted February 27, 2011 kept quail in big groups at one time,pens of 36 adults,try to put birds in new pens at same time dont add fresh birds,also they love smashing heads on cage tops. cocks love a scrap some strains more than others. Millet 4,497 Posted March 2, 2011 Report Share Posted March 2, 2011 Here is a picture i took today, i noticed a bit of bullying yesterday, while i was watching them this morning i noticed two hens taking turns at attacking this one, they have all been together for around 7mth with no problems. Ive also had a hen bird attack a cock bird, so bad infact the cock bird nearly died and they where brought up as chicks together, nothing is plain sailing with Jap quail, they might be little but they are pure evil with each other from the minute they hatch.
