Guest Frank
All about common sense and respect, isn't it? I don't personally know if cattle, with or without calves, bulls or otherwise, what ever breed would bother me at night. I've simply never tried to find out. I steer clear of them (Groaner there, eh?!). My neighbour, Patrick, seems to look on his herd as a man might his only children. Worships and worries over the bloody things. And he's given me outright permission to go where I like, set what I like, pursue what I like how I like, all over his land. He only mutters one small proviso; That I don't do it near where ever he has his cattle that day (or night). So I don't. Period. If you're doing it legally, with permission, you're a Guest. Don't guests act with a modicum of respect and good manners? If ye there without permission? Double bad, isn't it? Ye not only disrespecting the landowner, ye taking the piss too. Asking for it. Sooner or later liable to get it as well. Then what? Come on here bitching and screaming about how " Some b*stard in a land rover shot my Dog! " ? He'll be just as furiously shouting to his mates how " Some b*stard was on my land, amongst my 'stock flashing a lamp around and running a f*cking Dog amongst them! ". But, if you were in the wrong, he'll be in the right. Any way ye look at it. RM; I'd personally find someone a bit more f*cking responsible to hang out with, mate. Why let someone like that drag ye down? Do ye really think it's worth it? Any of it? Spot on. Frank. try to stay away from stock if i can because every lurcher i've owned has been like myself(shite scared of cattle at night) Likewise. Frank.
OldTrapCollector 377
You're lucky to still have your own health and your dogs. Listen to sense and find another lamping partner - it's irresponsible people like him that give us all a bad press. OTC
Rainmaker 7
Hi folks, Interesting replies as always Can I just clarify a couple of things: 1) The guy takes all his dogs out at the same time, and if it walks up he'll run it. If he finds a hole, he'll put a little 'un in it. Not my cup of tea at all (to be clear - they were all his dogs!) but alas. 2) Please don't mistake HIS modus operandi for mine. I wouldn't be posting this at all if I thought the guy showed even half an ounce of sense, or if I didn't know he was full of trouble. I was simply left wondering whether I was the only "poofter" scared of cattle and with enough brain not to run dogs at them at night, especially with young lol Found out later the guy was not on permission at the time, I was tagging along for a night's so-called sport... I was stuck for a day out, and he was stuck for a lift. Least said the better in hindsight. I don't think it would serve any good to repeat the whole sorry tale on the internet. I'd better leave it at that! Although many on here know me better than that - for the rest I just didn't want people getting the wrong end of the stick is all
Guest Frank
No worries sir. I could tell by the way you discribed it, that thats not you. All the best, Frank.
Guest Macnas
Rainmaker If I sounded annoyed it was with the behaviour of your aquaintance, not with you. I suppose I feel strongly about the issue, coming from farming people as I do. During this season, I've had many days sport cut short by there being too much livestock about, what with the mild weather and all. To me it's just a fact of country life, when you're lucky enough to have access to someones land, have a care for that land and all that's in it.
FLY 0
Agree with pointer28,rather piss off a bull than a suckler herd !
Simoman 110
I try to avoid livestock if possible, I am a bit wary of horses but had a bad experience several years ago when a group of bullocks tried to kill my dog, he outran them around the field and escaped by jumping over a dry stone wall, the worrying thing was the 10 foot drop on the other side. Simoman 110
It was a collie I used for lamping, he was fine apart from being a bit sore. Always wary of horses after a friends Russell was stamped to death.
SeanTheHawker 0
thought it was always a myth with cattle and calfs, usually avoided just incase tho, but got chased by about half a dozen cows and 2 calfs on friday night, wasnt even 100 yards to them, tho never bother with sheep at all. and no permission where horses are kept
Guest Macnas
I think bullocks are the most dangerous. Bullocks are angry at the world (well, who wouldnt be) and will chase everything. And by god do they hate dogs.
