Finally got my new camera D200 :)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, as a few of you know i've been on the lookout for a new camera for a while and finally managed to get it this week :boogie: I used to have the Nikon D40 which is very user friendly and easy to use so stayed with Nikon as i know a few people with them and never heard a bad word about them :toast: . I knew the D200 would be a big jump up but didn't realise how much different it would be :icon_redface: I knew it would be more advanced with settings and the like but for some reason thought it still had the dial where i could put it on auto then ease in to it all gently !! I have had a quick read through the manual as i feel that books can tell you everything but practice and experiance are the best forms of learning  Here are the pics i took this morning which seem to vary quite a bit in focus and light contrast :icon_redface: . I have the camera set on P, L fine , centre auto focus 1 point and using a 70/300 4-5.6 G lens but the pics just aren't sharp ? . I'm thinking that if i make the focus a larger area on the camera i will gain more of a larger focused picture. I.e the whole dog rather than the front / back half ? I can already see glimpses of how good the camera can be and i know its going to take somne time playing but am looking foward to learning. I do have 2 other lenses here which i'm going to try and get out with over the next couple of days, another 70/300 but the new Vr model and also a brand new 18/105 Vr but thought i'd ask before i go out and make the same mistakes !!

All constructive critisism is welcome !! ( Shouldn't be hard for 80% of people on this forum, critisising that is :whistling::D )

The camera is a quality bit of kit and images should be sharp enough WITHOUT post editing software.

I would put my house on it being that bloody lens! I should have skipped it when you were here, ditch it, use mine, and then we'll talk. :tongue2:

Focus can also be taken of "point" focus .......... back to your manual and if you get stuck call me at home.

Dont forget if you are cropping an image, especially with the D200 you will reduce the quality of the image. I think its only a 6mp camera? My boss had one he was never happy with it really, but it did produce some great shots.

This link explains why all digital images need sharpening post processing, and how to do it.

and a thread on it here:

You should maybe look to joining a photography forum too, you will get loads of help and advice there.:)

The D200 is 10mp, and a very good digital camera, Ive used one for a long time..heres a tip I got off a semi-pro..http://www.reverseimage.co.uk/set the white balance to Cloudy, and give it a -1 value, leave it there for the bulk of your work..it will give your pics similar effect as a warming filter, and the camera just loves this setting

Centre weighted and spot focussing are to be worked up to, get it set on matrix metering to start off with..this metering system on the D200 is usually great for many situations
