jclay91 12
Im new to shooting and was wondering if any one can help me get into wildfowling mainly geese we have ducks on our shoot but no geese ive herd the solway use to be good and also holy island, if anyone can help all sensible advice apreciated. Solway is still good if all the conditions are right (and if the geese are there!). BUT...it is usually a matter of sitting under big skeins of geese that are way too high for even the big bores...there are plenty of tools that fire at them though Permits are available for shooting on the tweed i think, not sure of cost or if they get many geese thre though!? If you arent already a member of BASC i would suggest you join them and ring up for a wildfowling booklet this will give you a list of all clubs in the country that offer pemits (daily and weekly) and who to contact to apply for one. If you are new to the sport i would suggest going out with someone before you go it alone, especially if going out on vast estuary marshes/mudflats you will want to vist your hunting grounds before the season starts in daylight and have a good mooch about to get familiar with the area and dont stray too far from the high water mark alone, mud is very decieving, it can look safe to walk on but you could easily get bogged down. An experienced wildfowler lost his life this last season while out 'fowling too many more have died in the past... Beware..'fowling can be dangerous...even the experts get caught out sometimes. But i do hope you take it up as it is a very enjoyable sport and trust me it does become addictive!! EDIT: if you dont mind travelling their are a few places further north worth checking out. Pm me if you would like to know more Edited February 24, 2011 by jclay91
