Tyla 3,179
I think i'd like it, spent alot of time in africa, 3 months walking round zimbabwe with a backpack and a year in zanzibar. Built a house there and started off with a bed and mossi net in the garden, a stand pipe and a campfire. The plan was to stay there but once the house was built i got bored and the people were enough to drive you to murder! The house is still there although a hurricane has blown the thatch roof off. Assuming i ever have any spare money i will go and fix it sometime. I've always been drawn to living outdoors, i've got a mate living in a converted library and spent most of one summer there with him. Its certainly a different ball game in the winter though. I really want to explore britain more, dogs, house, wife and work (if i ever find any again lol) permitting! I shall probably save it til the wife has had enough of me and kicks me out, buy a van, load up with the basics, sell the rest and become a wierd old man who lives in a van!

lapin2008 1,587
I like the idea of this but i recon it would be better to look at it as more of a long holiday then a new way of life (a couple of months to a year at a time), as the reality of living in solitude/getting ill/cold for long periods would most likely wear me down after a while and the novelty would wear off. Probably something i would think about if i ever end up un-married as would probably end in tears being trapped in van with the misses for months on end

collie/grey 238
I would love to live like it for a short while, just to experience the freedom. I wouldn't like to spend a cold wet winter in a caravan, i hate being cold and i can't stand going without a shower, 3 days would be my limit lol if i had a river near by i would be happy, im quite anti social when i want to be and enjoy my own company and the dogs but i would get bored and lonely after a while. Would like to do it sometime though. Good thread with some interesting replies.

Personally the romantic idea of travelling remote areas of Britain, perhaps Europe and sitting outside around an open fire on a summer evening, fishing, letting your dog catch your game. Although real life gets in the way with mortgages, jobs, money and responsibilities..........what about the winter when you cant get a fire going and your boots are frozen to the ground outside the wagon Seen some decent little stoves in the vardos
THE STIFFMEISTER 16,359
Strange this should pop up but I was just saying to the wife the other week that if we ever broke up, that would be me, vamoose , gone off the grid whatever None of this Thailand bollocks, just a van , me a dog and as much as I'd need to get established somewhere .... I really fancy the idea one day of just sailing away into the distance, meander over Europe , swing through the dark Russian corridor to Mongolia and retrace it through the stans and the Middle East to Africa and loop round it Just cash a passport and a toothbrush lol
