Dan_Mercian 27
What's the shortest length barrel your allowed by law? I'm fed up with not being able to 'swing' when rough shooting, its about 32in ATM I'm going to get it chopped. Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
from memory anything under 24" is illegal Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Yep, on a Shotgun certificate, anything under 24" is too short to be held on SGC. To me, that would also be too short for rough shooting or most other types of shooting too. 28" is fairly standard game gun length. Quote Link to post
RicW 67
Why not have 2" cut off to start with? Try it for a while. You can always cut more off but you can't stick it back on! Quote Link to post
Dan_Mercian 27
Thanks guys! What happens with the choke do you have to have that re-tapped etc or does that just become no longer used? Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Depends on the size of the bore in the first place, the easiest way that I know of is to have removable chokes fitted. I'm not sure how they re choke a barrel from cylinder Quote Link to post
halamrose 24
If your gun is worth much you may like to get a cheep 24inch one to see if you like it. Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
Personally I wouldnt go for less than 26" (fairly standard for skeet guns) I had a 25" side by side years ago great to carry and very light just dont like s/s so got rid and got a 28" Winchester 101 Lightweight. Again personally I wouldnt go down the route of cutting down your 32" barrels as has been said you will / may lose all choke depending on what you lop off. You then have to see if it is possible to get it threaded to take multichokes! To me your best option is to part ex the 32" for a good 'field' gun with shorter barrels and multichokes. Dan_Mercian 27
Cheers for the advice! It's only a shitty cheap pump I use for knocking about in the woods that's why I thought it doesn't matter if I cut it down because it's not worth £200 anyway Quote Link to post
halamrose 24
If it's for woods work and ranges are short you may prefer not having choke anyway, so cut it down yourself. Apart from th 24" minimum, I cant remember if there is an overall length minimum - but I think thats for rifles for which the barrel limit is 12" if I remember right. Found it here: http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/d_to_g/firearms/ search by doing ctrl-f for the word 'lenght' H Quote Link to post
dave1372 83
so cut it down yourself. Quote Link to post
halamrose 24
Maybe it would be hasty, but why wouldn't you? Quote Link to post
Dan_Mercian 27
so cut it down yourself. Can you do that? Or is it stupidly hard metal to cut? I'm guessing it could be done because of all these criminals with 'sawn offs' Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
I use a 25 inch side by side for a lot of my rough shooting, as little is ever that far away. Works a treat. Wouldnt use it on driven though. Quote Link to post
