brunty29cdo 5
i took my 7 month old 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy for a walk last night through the local fields where we walk everyday (which happens to be full of rabbits). we saw loads of rabbits but i didnt want him running them as hes young, anyway he saw a rabbit in center of field loping about (moon was out) and pulling my arms out so i put my high power cheapy torch on it and it didnt seem bothered of our presence and pup was itching to go so curiosity got better of me and i let him go... he trotted down edge of beam half assed but then the rabbit took off and so did the pup.. i was amazed at how fast he got up to it and was on top of it straight away, the rabbit turned and threw the pup wide but he soon caught up and turned it again but pup also turned keeping tight and nailed it on the straight,he pinned it down and rabbit squealed,he picked it up and started to retrieved but rabbit wriggled and pup lost grip and dropped it,bugger! pup as on its tail again but just missed it as rabbit made it to safety.... pup went into hedge after it but reamerged with nothing.i switched off lamp and pup was by my side staright away with the biggest grin on his cheeky face! i was over the moon to say the least but i called it a night as hes young and dont want to ruin him. i was surprised on how fast he gained on the rabbit after being thrown, his excelleration was amazing to see. im goin on 6 month tour next month so just wanted him to get a taster before i went. bird 9,984
well done mate, same for me my pup Tod. Bryn knocked a rabbit out of cover and caught it , feckin Tod runs up knocks it out Bryn's mouth , rabbit runs off And Tod grabbed it 15 yds away.He stood still with it and i took it off him. Its great for pups to learn to use there (nose, jaw, and feet) but regards retrieving with 2 dogs who both want the catch forget it Quote Link to post
jf1970 328
well done mate, i wouldn't worry to much about her leaving the rabbit go, mine done that at the start a few times but she learned from it. mine is also 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy. Quote Link to post
brunty29cdo 5
thanks everyone,im chuffed to bits and im pretty sure the pup is too.im gonna be carefull to only give him easy ones and only one run per trip. my pup very developed for 7 months as i think smaller dogs develope physically younger than larger, heavier dogs. my wife will be chief trainer/walker while im gone but both my dogs have strong prey drive so im sure they will naturally develope over the summer and catch some young rabbits to boost there instinct and confidence so when i get back hel be at a nice age (14 months) for late early autunm and next season il have to get the camera out today and get some more recents pics of him. atb Quote Link to post
jacksbignose 8
That'll give your pup something to dream about... watch his little legs go 10 to the dozen when he replays that catch in his sleep! Quote Link to post

Yeah I'm in Exeter mate, I offered you a day out with the ferrets earlier in the season if you fancied it ( I think you were quite new to the area), I've got a few bits of permission up here and quite a lot in North Devon ( a mates got stacks we go on up there) your welcome for a day out next season with the dogs if you wanted to. I'm taking my little lad out tonight ( he's drove the missus mad all day lol) so I doubt I'll see much he aint learnt quiet yet. ATB Kev Quote Link to post
