Saluki's weight

Recommended Posts

The wife had her dog to the vet for needles yesterday while there she did the weighing thing. Now shes a 3 yr old pur saluki in good nick. she weighed 21kgs now my dogs are all lager types than her ,still this seems a little light to me. my question to the pur saluki owners on here would be what is the average weight of a working pur saluki bitch?

Friends of mine had a very lightly built Saluki lurcher, mainly Saluki. She always showed ribs, pin bones and vertebrae, didn't eat a huge amount and could run forever, but they were always embarassed

Ive had 2 people lately stop me in the street and comment on how hungry the black saluki I have is.I feed her very well and exercise her every day but she does look malnourished.Shes wormed and I give her plenty of fats with her grub but I reckon shes just a naturally skinny frame. It can be a bit embarrasing at times though.

She always showed ribs, pin bones and vertebrae, didn't eat a huge amount and could run forever, but they were always embarassed at how skinny she looked. Another friend runs Saluki types and they show all their ribs and are incredibly fit, well fed and awesome in the field. Marathon runners weren't meant to look bulky!

Saluki x whippet/grey stands just about 23" and is 18.1kg if anything I feed him too much but he still looks painfully skinny. He eats almost twice as much as my other dogs and I had to cut back on their food as they were putting weight on. It's probably because he gets loads of exercise as I walk 6-7 miles for the main walk of the day and also 2 shorter walks. He is walked along coastal paths and through fields so is rarely on the lead.

I feed my salukis, pasta and sardines in sunflour oil,a fist of redmills and lots of flesh,ie:throttles, goats, rabbit, chicken carcasses every evening, cooking oil added and I might as well be pouring it down the toilet the difference it makes but their full of energy and thats what matters.

I've 2 bitches here the UK coursing bred bitch is just a touch over 23" and weighs 19kg and my import is just under 23" and weighs just under 23kg I have no problem with bitches weight they are very good doers on the 3/4-1lb of whole rabbit, beef trim or chicken carcasses they are primarily feed once daily. I have two brothers here and one is very lean having had 3 bitches in season one after the other since before Xmas he has had no interest in food.

The Kazakh dogs seems naturally to more solidly built dog, Being primarily a fox dog it pays to have a bit of weight behind you.

I prefer mine to well covered otherwise you risk losing the back off them on a heavy night lamping.

She is worth every penny it cost to bring her in and more, of course the real effort was made by my friends in the US who bread her and reared till she was 10 months old with many trips back and forth to the vets to get her ready to travel and then driving considerable distance to get her to the airport for me for which I am eternitally grateful. I simple played the waiting game and drove a 1000 mile round trip to collect her from Heathrow, I would say worth it all so much so I intent to bring in more. .
