silentshot1 206
Right then, it's been a while, but having read so many posts on here and not contributed for a while, I figure it's about time for another contribution. OK - so Saturday starts late and less than perfect, I had a pass to from Her Majesty to be out at 06.00 for the day, which I promptly slept through, only to come too, then rise at about 10.45 and spend the next three hours fixing the hoover and creating new ways of introducing Mr. Dyson to his super sucky wand and parking his garish, plastic, animal monstrosity where his Ball barrow can join it! Anyhow, finally got the majestic nod at 14.45 and headed for my permission and zero range with the S410 TDR .22 and Venom tuned HW 77 .177. I've been having a few problems with consistency with the S410 and alas, a barrel clean suggested by Davey didn't solve it, so after 40 odd shots of here, there and everywhere within a 6" group, I figured it was back to the drawing board on that and out with 'Old faithful', the 22 year old HW77 with a retro 3 x 9 - Kassner wide screen scope. I put a new target (A5 piece of paper with a 1" square of masking tape) out at a paced 30 meters and settled in my favorite sitting shooting position. Whap, whap, whap, whap, four pellets straight on the black, within half an inch group, suddenly things were looking up, I paced out another 5 meters and tried again and was delighted with three more adding to the group. Following on from Simon's (Pianoman) advise to try and ensure the cycle rrom raising the gun to taking the shot was 8 seconds or under, things were really improving! I reloaded, put the gun on the passenger seat of the car and drove round the field and up the farm track, looking for our long eared chums! As I was making my way up the central track I saw my wife's uncle and cousin had set up a bivvy camp, over the other side of a thin field to my right, right on top of bunny base 1. Never mind, I waved and slowly continued. After another 50 meters or so, I watched a crow land and settle in the same field to my right. I stopped the jeep, lowered the window all the way, slowly reached for the gun and popped the barrel through the window, using my leading hand to rest the fore end on, whilst bracing my forearm on the door frame. Dropping my eye to the scope, I brought my breathing right down, aimed at the top of the crows head, estimated the range at about a guessed 38 meters, corrected slightly left for windage and gently squeezed the trigger. Blat was returned a snippet later with Thump as the AA Field found it's target and I watched the crow just keel over through the scope, brilliant. I drove round the field, on to the footpath and down towards the crow. Jumping out the car, I paced the distance to the crow from the far side of the field at only 10 paces. the field is 55 meters wide, meaning an awesome 45 meter shot! I was freakin delighted and the entry wound proved that the pellet had dropped about an inch or so down and in to the lower neck. Crap range estimation but an awesome shot for me with a springer, plus a bonus congratulatory coffee and admiration from my wifes relatives which will find it's way back to the in law's, as they had seen the whole thing.. real bonus! I left them planning their own venture out lamping and headed off about 500 meters up in the direction I had come. I had spotted a well shortened patch of grass and a few pooh heaps the other day and figured it was worth a look. Nestling down in a patch of longer grass by the fence line that runs along the entire top of the down, I felt the last of the sun on my back and watched the long shadows creep across the floor as dusk settled. After about 30 minutes, I saw a flash of grey and white flash from the other side of the fence line, above the long grass. A particularly bouncy bugs was tearing around in the scrub the other side then suddenly he was through the fence and up the field in a flash. Clearly on rabbit steroids he vanished in to the dusk before I could even raise the gun. Bugs two appeared about 5 minutes later, cautiously edging out of cover at about 35 meters. I watched, gently bringing my leading leg up with the gun on top and slipping my leading hand under the fore end. Anyone else who prefers the sitting stance knows that unlike prone, when bringing the gun up you are at your most visible and therefore this phase is critical. I gently bought the gun up, dropped my eye to the scope and watched as rabbit settled side on. I again took up the pressure of the first stage and started slightly as I felt the second stage engage, sending an AA sleeping pill tearing towards bugs, hearing the tell tale crack and watching him role over with one slight kick. Fantastic! I waited another 30 mins but the dark was beginning to get the better of me, the only bad point about the HW77 I have, is where it has some form of muzzle weight on the barrel end, there's no room for a mod and with the wind in the right direction, it sends a muzzle crack right down the valley, scaring everything for 45 mins or so! Anyhow, point being that I had a rabbit and a crow and it was dark and time for home as my lamp was in the car, but my battery pack was somewhere else! I hope this shows to all the newer guys who are posting questions regarding second hand PCP's, that for the same money or less, you can have an ultra reliable, always ready, consistent, high end springer that can last you indefinitely. Yes it takes longer to master but if something lasts 22 years +, an extra few hours on the paper really pales in to insignificance! I got a photo of the crow and will attach it tomorrow, but in the mean time, thanks for reading! 2 Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Great read there Silentshot1! 45-metre Crow shot and a 35-metre rabbit! Wow! Nothing to prove with a shot like that mate. There is nothing to beat the Weihrauch HW77. For sheer accuracy with tough durability alone, this rifle truly deserves the title "Airgun Of The Millenium" and not that over-rated, bottle-swallowing ugly stick from Theoben. Whether she's 22 years or 20 hours old, she'll shoot a storm with blistering accuracy straight out of the box and NEVER pack up on you. I'm interested to read yours likes Air Arms Fields though. Definately going to try those in my own .22 HW77. Though to be honest, mine shoots like a dream on .22 H&N Field & Target Trophy, with RWS Superdomes a very, very good second. Have you got a decent pic or two of your HW77 as, I'd like to see what this muzzle-weight looks like on yours? There is an adaptor that allows a silencer to be fitted, I've seen a German gunsmith with one on his HW77 on YouTube. In truth though, any crack from the muzzle scaring off the quarry for half an hour, is a small price to pay for the reward of claiming a clean, long range kill with a shot from a skilful, composed, well-structured aim. Well shot there Silentshot buddy! SPA from me. Well done. All the best. Simon Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
Hi penguinhunter and welcome here mate. Jesus I hope not. Mixy really flattened my shoot last year. But you really must get yourself a try-out with a Weihrauch HW77. Calibre doesn't matter, .22, .20 or .177, it's all the same with this beautiful rifle. ATB Simon Quote Link to post

Simon Here you go Simon, photo and link http://springgunshooter.co.uk/resources/V-Mach+RACE+Muzzle+Brake++Product+Information+May+2006001.pdf The bit on the end of the muzzle is a venom designed muzzle brake. The gun and scope won a 50 meter bell target shooting competition at a game fair in 1989 with the 14 year old previous owner hitting the bell 8 times out of ten against a field of 280 or so other competitors so it's got the pedigree! After PMing you about improving my distances, I spent a couple of days paper punching before possibly hitting on the solution, by giving my right hand a quick lick I added extra grip on the fore end. Worked like a charm, just working on improving my noodle arms now, after 250 odd shots over two days my arms were shot! Also your advise about time aiming was bang on, obvious really but I started to really notice the length of time I was holding the gun on the target for! Hi Davy, Yah, bit of a funny one, I had the S410 AA serviced 6 months ago and not changed anything, pellets or gun set up. The problem started with three pellets grouping in a ragged one hole, then the next three would land again in a group, but in an entirely different spot. On Saturday it was worse with pellets going all over, from 160 down to 110 bar, so will have another try with the silencer off when I get a chance. Thanks for reading! Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi SS. Excellent post and shooting mate. Damn fine shooting with the 77, I must get my 95 out a bit more. Lot to be said for the springers ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post
swiftnbold 4
Really good write-up that silentshot; I was out there with you, even felt myself slow the breathing as you described bringing the rifle up on bugs I've just bought a Prosport for exactly the reasons you describe. Filled my MKII huntsman up the other week to hear psssstttt and then silence. The valve stem has gone and I'm waiting for a replacement to get to the gunsmiths. Could have invested in another PCP but the thought of just taking your rifle from the cabinet, putting a handfull of pellets in your pouch and away you go was the answer for me! Quote Link to post
Ron Weasley 83
Great write up Silent mate, really enjoyed reading that. Slut point from me. Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 792
nice write up SS, and excellent springer action too mate!! cheers, wurz Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
So pleased to have been of service to you SS. As an alternative to licking your hand every few shots, try using a real leather glove. I always wear one on my leading, supportive hand as it has just the right amount of grip with a bit extra cushioning. But if my suggestions are helping improving your shooting, that's thanks enough mate. I like the look of that V-Mach muzzle brake and cocking handle you have too. I like my foresight and lock-up unit as fitted standard, as I like to refit the rear sight and shoot with open sighta, as well as a scope. But there is a German made silencer with an attatchment that fits to the standard foresight/lock-up unit. I've seen it on Youtube. Must find out more and I'll let you know. All the best for now pal, and if there's anything more I can help you with, just send me a PM. Looks like your doing fine though All the best.
