Water Badger 26
Last weekend we had a go with my new traditional long net in heavy cover did ok but retreated to a farm that I had had reports of a serious rat infestation yher right probably seen two and got straight on the phone! Any way rain was coming down and the farm has a good head of ferrals so worth a visit. Upon arrival Scapman my companion claims he`s seen a rat the size of a cat coming from a man who has in the past struggled to hit a cow with a catty !! (more later) we had a brief sit up and yep sure enough it was infested we made a quick game plan for this weekend and departed to our families This morning we met at 0800 for a quick zero session checking how both guns performed at various ranges and I had switched my scope for a Leopold that i picked up cheap hoping to give me the advantage in the dark areas that my whitetail did not Upon arrival scapman had a quick fag outside of the straw stack to prevent potential disaster we climbed up to the top covered by the new roof warm and dry overlooking the feed troughs for the cattle and the large maize feeder looking down from about 5m up on our killing area First rat entered the area and scapman fired with the crosshairs on its feet the rat jumped and run off there had been no resounding whack so a decision was made to aim dead on no hold under Next rat came in alongside the maze feeder poped under and then stuck his head back out whack I took him full in the boat race! First blood the action continued fast and furious with us both crossing fire arcs to ensure all hole covered Suddenly a big boy broke cover from the maze feeder making for the sleeper wall whack scrapmans first shot found the mark but moving targets are hard and it was a body shot still going i slotted him with another and scrapman with a third tough them rats We stopped for a coffee and scrapman a fag we had been having trouble with the cows blocking the hotspot with their body’s and opted to take a catty up top to modify their feeding positions !! once back in place the cows were obviously protecting the scaly tails blocking our shots! A quick catty shot to the rump and the offender moved providing a clear shot this routine had to be repeated once or twice partly due to scrapmans catty hooting and partly due to the deal the cows had with the rats! We found the best way was to cover the hole and first sign of movement cross hairs on the nose and fire The terrier was used to pull some out where they had crawled back into their holes Some of the best fun I’ve had for ages 25 or so we think with the ones that fliped back into the holes plus ferrals magpie and two crows 2 Quote Link to post

zini 1,939
Some nice size rats there Badger and it sounds like you had a good day out with your pal Im not sure about shooting the cows on their butts with a catty to get them to move though buddy . Do that on any permission i have shot on before and i would of been quickly asked not to come back again by the farmer . It sort of goes against what we try a portray in the sport of "protecting all live stock and boundaries" ATB Si Edited February 20, 2011 by zini Quote Link to post
