Recommended Posts

i have a 8 month old beddy whippet cross collie greyhound and shes eating her shit not all the time she is fed on dry food any suggestions ???????

hey pal, first of all its common for dogs to eat shit, all breeds so dont be to concerned just yet.i take it its fed regular so its not down to hunger, then you gotta think worms so make sure thats up to date, are the stools loose? does it eat it as soon as its turned it out?maybe mimicing its mum from an early age etc............my uncle who has had dogs all his life, terriers an lurchers reckons the intestine of the latter is not as efficiant as some other breeds due to the physique an sometimes when the shit comes out it still holds sum good stuff that appeals to the dog.....just a few ideas mate an im sure you will get a few more on here but like i said dont be to worried about it,dogs are dogs GOOD LUCK AN ATB

its missing something out of its diet go to the pet shop and ask for rock sulphur (think its called that) it looks like yellow rock cost about 60 or 70p for a tup. brake a piece of bout the size of walnut and put it in the dogs water. and make sure the dogs wormed regular.

It's more common than you think.

If you want to stop her add a little pineapple juice to her food as dogs wont eat stools containing it, the juice reacts in the intestines and apparently tastes foul once out the other end so makes them less appealing.

a lot of well fed well conditioned young dogs will eat there own shit, they just do it, theres probably nothing wrong with the dog, dont worry about it. The scientific term for this behaviour is coprophagia and it is a surprisingly common and natural behaviour that has many of its origins with your dog’s ancestors. There are two main reasons they did this. The first was for reasons of hygiene in the communal den. The adults would ingest the stools of their puppies in order to keep the cramped den area clean and remove odours that could attract predators. The second reason, although controversal, was for the nutritional value of stools which can contain vitamins B and K. its just a natural thing for some dogs to do.

vitamin b is found in cereals and pulses, get these from any supermarket,

vitamin k is found in green vegetables, get these from any supermarket,

whether its a lack of vitamins or not adding a small amount of the above to your daily feed can only do good, it cant do no harm

Sounds about right. I've stopped stressing about my bitch that does it. I've tried stopping it by using pineapple, chasing and scolding it, changing diet etc but........it is just in its nature to do it

Do you chase it or anything when it does it? One of my dogs used to do it when it was a pup and we got told it was just doing it for the attention, stopped reacting when it done it and it stopped. Whether thats why it stopped or if its diet was sorted out i dnt no but worth trying

Raw pineapple juice contains almost all vitamins and minerals essential for the digestive system. in all mammals, It stimulates the kidney, and also relieves intestinal disorders and has diuretic properties. (keeps the piss clean and healthy)

Raw pineapple juice is also claimed to be an effective remedy for intestinal worms. mix a bit with the cereals and pulses, and greens etc, add a bit of meat a bit of dog biscuit, and your on your way to making your own barf,

SOME DOGS EAT THEIR OWN SHIT SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY LIKE THE TASTE & HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH AN INADEQUATE DIET.. MANY GROW OUT OF IT, OR A MUZZLE WILL PUT SOME DOGS OFF DOING IT. LITTLE TIP I PICKED UP IS TO SPRINKLE SOMETHING HOT & SPICY LIKE PAPRIKA OVER ANY SHIT LYING AROUND SO THE DOG GETS A ROASTING HOT MOUTH & LEARNS IT AINT SO PALATABLE ANY MORE  Edited by optimus

COCKER I WAS TOLD THE VITAMIN K DEFICENCY THEORY BEFORE. CONSULTATED A NUTRITIONALIST & WAS TOLD THAT A BASIC DIET WOULD CONTAIN MORE THAN ENOUGH VITAMIN K FOR YOUR DOGS NEEDS MATE. ALTHOUGH I AGREE THAT A BIT MORE THOUGHT ON NUTRITION CANT HURT. DISGUSTING HABIT EATING SHIT

As some members of said, coprophagia is uncommon with a lot of species including dogs, 99% of the time it has nothing to do with difficiencies in the diet, i have one dog who does it occasionally, its disgusting but not totally unnatural. Forget trying to solve the problem by altering the diet or adding supplements, add rock sulphur to the dogs water bowl and that should stop the problem........

Charcoal biscuits seemed to stop mine when she was doing it regular as a pup. Someone once told me that it's usually the bitches that do it, for the same reason as Cocker stated here:
