Just Got In From Lamping

Recommended Posts

Started the night off around a small pit hole and some cover crops as usual saw a pair of eyes from a very lamp shy fox, terriers will be catching up with him soon. After this we worked our way around one of the release pens but came up with nothing. Stopped for 10 mins trying to get some feeling back in my hands its quite cold on the back of kubota at times, finally got some feeling back and headed to an area that we haven't been able to cover for a while due to sheep grazing the stubble turnips. Anyway we stopped along side the stubble turnip field looking over a grass paddock with some large pit holes in, had a squeak for 5 mins then sat quiet for 10 mins flicked the lamp on and about 500 yards away a pair of eyes. Gave the lamp to a lad that has been helping me all season (he's getting quite good at lamping now) gave a couple of small squeaks and he ran like a train at us, stopped him 70 yard off and dropped him with the .223. He managed to run 50 yard to the lane god knows how cause his guts were everywhere. Looked like a young dog fox maybe 1/2 years, had a couple of puncture wounds to his muzzle that were fresh. As his stomache was hanging out I cut it open to see what he had been eating as he was very aneamic, and to my surprise found his stomache full of grapes both green and red and hazel catkins. Don't know where he has found the grapes unless he's been to one of the neighbouring farms bins. Anyway a good night and just caught last orders at the pub.

The only true way to gurantee a quick kill are to stop the the transmission of information from the brain the muscles, ie head , neck shots. Or to insure very quick loss of blood pressure, ie heart lung/major arteries. Shooting in the gut will kill, indeed. But it tends to be slower blood loss or shock, which takes a little longer than a shot to the vitals.

Interesting that he was eating grapes by the way........... Hardly the diet of a hunter, is there a lack of prey around?

I did shoot him in the heart/lungs its the only place I ever shoot them, he was standing square on to me bullet entered through his chest. His lungs and diagphram were ripped to pieces, thats why I was surprised he managed to run.

There isn't a massive population of rabbits or rats/mice (well I hope there isn't or I'm not doing my job)
