Ratting Allotment and Farm

Recommended Posts

I posted earlier in the week about starting ratting but got no replies so trying again.

I got a 3 year old jack russel bitch today. I mainly got her for bushing and working alongside the lurchers. She has done a bit of ratting before so knows what the crack is.

I have got permission on an allotment with chicken sheds and a farm with loads of out buildings.

Will I need a smoker or will just lifting up rubble and sheets of plastic etc be enough to start with? Obviously wear big gloves etc goes without saying but any tips for someone new to ratting will be appreciated.

Is that for training a pup?

I am told that my bitch has already done a fair amount of ratting.

I was just wondering what the best way of getting the rats out is? And if a smoker is essential?

Okay I will look into a smoker lads. Cheers.

Pitchy - Call me stupid but what is the shovel for?

I only got her today so want to let her settle in before taking her out. Took her up the local fields with my lurcher tonight and she was straight in the bushes and flushed various birds out. So fingers crossed :-)

shovel is for digging the rat burrows. but if your allotments are like mine the burrows will lead under the floors of the sheds, so a smoker will be your best bet. if the bitch has done a bit before, she should mark for you. just let the bitch have a walk round, and go off what she tells you. you will find them under the sheds, under plastic sheeting, rubble, timber. compost bins are a good one aswell. take her on the lead for now, when she marks move the rubbish, and if its a good mark, praise her. also it gives you a chance to see if she is steady with hens. sometimes i dont take the smoker, i just follow the dogs nose. and lift the junk, and dont even bother with the hen houses. also just be aware that on allotments there tends to be a lot of broken green house glass. sometimes the allotment holders stuff this in the burrows, thinking that it will stop the rats digging. have a look round the hen houses and move what you can see.

dont expect big bags off the allotments, but its a good craic, and very challenging. atb and keep us updated

dont use ferrets imo mate they get smashed up fighting rats  have you watched any dvds or youtube vids on ratting? theres some good vids , if your going to use a smoker id say more dogs the better . if the russell is marking the holes then happy days -fire up the smoker and watch for them bolting or use the spade to open the holes up for the terrier ,a good ratting dog will go mad digging on to get their quarry. good luck with it mate get out their and have a go cos you will learn through experiance atb
