chartpolski 23,563
Some dogs are lucky with them and others aren't is the way I see it C.P Depends on the ground they are running on as well is my opinion As i said, I've had, and have, dogs that have them, and dogs that haven't ! But if it was my choice, I'd rather they didn't have dew claws. BUT ... a man who I know for a fact has been involved in Greyhound and Saluki Coursing for many years firmly believes that dew claws should be left on ! It's a choice we make or don't ! Cheers. Only time a dewclaw can be used for its purpose ( apart from holding bones ) is for a running dog to grip the ground when turning.. I don't believe that, and neither doe's any one who knows dogs ! There is NO purpose for a dew claw in the vast majority of dogs ! Some say that the weird dog that still hunts Puffins needs their dew claws, but Lurchers and Running dogs certainly don't need them !If they are taken of when a pup is only days old... ok, do you need to take them off older dogs... only if YOU want to !! Cheers. Totally agree fella as once knocked they are never the same.. but why do some of the old lads like to keep them on ? A man who slipped Waterloo Dogs told me there was a ligament that went from the dew claw across the foot, amd if the dew claws wern't removed corectly,it could affect the standing of the front foot !! I honestly don't know how true this is, but if having dew claws removed, make sure the vet who is doing it knows what he is doing !! Cheers. Quote Link to post

BIG ZOOK 5
Many good posts on the removal of dew claws.Small dogs and bred down grews tend to catch the claws on a frequent basis ,lurchers and sight hounds ,tend to suffer injury to the dew claw when runing in stubble fields. An injured dew claw tends to bleed like fook and can encourage foreign matter into the wound. If you have a dog with a standard dew claw, trim it back, little by little every month. The "quick" blood vessel inside the claw, retreats back into the nail bed .Not an ideal situation ,but can help.
