Ther'e usualy taken of at one or two days old; now it would be a vets operation and cost you a fair bit ! I've got dogs that have them and dogs that haven't. chartpolski 23,467 Posted February 17, 2011 Report Share Posted February 17, 2011 They should be done at a couple of days old, they take them off as the dog will keep injuring them when it's running It's a bit of an exageration to say "they will keep injuring them", as I've had dogs with dew claws that NEVER injured them, but, to me it seems the faster types, like Non- Ped Whippets, Grews, etc, seem to injure dew claws much more than "Lurcher" bred types of dog ! They are a nonessential claw and serve no earthly good to a dog. To take them off at a day or two old is a very minor thing and it's one less thing to worry about on a working dog... saying that I had a dog that almost tore them off every season and it didn't stop him working, in fact when he caught them it didn't seem to bother him; not saying it's the same for every dog! A guy I know that used to do loads of coursing told me that dogs with dew claws turn faster. Maybe it does and maybe its bollocks. Quote Link to post

Cheers. i have had some lurchers that had problems with theirs that were not so fast. my qhippet has his and never had a problem so my opinion is different in to say i think a dog can be just unlucky with its jews. i.e on a bad run or bad growth have em sticking out just waiting to get busted. on the ones i has bad jew,s i used to tape them up when hunting. i do have some with them on and never had a prob but for 100% saftey its best to have em off at an early new born stage but if your dog suffers from em at an adult stage and the dog is good enough then get them taken off by the vet and let the dog rest a few months. There is NO purpose for a dew claw in the vast majority of dogs ! Some say that the weird dog that still hunts Puffins needs their dew claws, but Lurchers and Running dogs certainly don't need them !If they are taken of when a pup is only days old... ok, do you need to take them off older dogs... only if YOU want to !!
