diggory 130
most holes are getting scraped out this time of year by charlie, and they usually do stink and a lot of folk start doubting their dogs when they say nothings at home !! Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,812
There are other smelly things that live down holes, so unless you specifically know the difference, dont just have a wiff get a musky smell and think "charlie is home", and the size of the hole isnt a dead certainty either. Alot of basic fieldcraft in terrierwork, only experience will teach you. Edited to add, that that hole looks inocent enough and probablem holds a fox at the right time but my point was just because a hole stinks doesnt mean it stinks of fox. I only say this because I get the impression your quite inexperienced and dont want you getting into trouble. Edited February 18, 2011 by Born Hunter 1 Quote Link to post

Fox’s will be in and out of every hole round this time of year, so by just smelly the hole alone may not prove anything. Only when you hear the barking of ur dog will your be satisfied that something is home. But be careful when sticking ur hand up the hole, last time I did that I ended up marrying her. 1 Quote Link to post
