Hi All,

 

I've got a 6 1/2 month old bull X. When I take him out for a walk he recalls perfectly everytime, until theres a distraction. It can be walkers or other dogs he doesn't care. If im close enough to him I put him on the lead. If not he runs over, just being curious but I know how annoying it is when other peoples dogs do the same to me. He has a sniff and a play and then comes back. How can I get him to recall immediately rather than when hes had a play and how can I stop him doing it in the first place without just putting him on the lead or will he grow out of it when he gets a bit older.

Have you learnt him to walk at heel and to stay both commands will stop the pup running on if so then just be firm he will click eventually

Totally normal puppy behaviour at his age. What you need to do is recall with a treat or something he really likes: bit of rag/old rabbit skin, something you can play with him retrieving etc. No point getting mad at him: achieves nothing. Be firm but not nasty, and loads of praise etc when he comes to you. Work on the recall when there are no distractions: and the other thing to do is always be one step ahead of him, so keep your eyes open and be aware of other dogs in the distance. When you see a possible distraction/temptation, then engage the dog with a food reward, get him to sit in front of you, focussed on you, on the lead to begin with. In other words, make yourself more interesting than the distraction. Its just a matter of patience and training, like has already been said, he will get there eventually. 6 - 12 months old is a testing time for any owner, and you need to make sure he knows that you are the pack leader of the two of you.

Walks really well to heel and the recall is flawless without distractions. Its just when there are other dogs around or even people he gets distracted. When he comes Give him praise and if he doesnt come I walk away at which point he usually returns but I want to try and stop him doing it in the first place as I know how annoying and sometimes intimidating it can be when a strange dog comes bounding over to you and the owner cant control or recall their dog. Is it just a case of persevere or is there something else I can do?

have the same problem with one of my bitchs, but she is getting better but word of warning about old rabbit skins yes they work to a degree but ma pup has eatin two of them i now use little bits of chicken or cold ham but i was getting prety pissed of with my pup but then i remeberd what my last dogs where like about 9 years ago easy to forget all the bad times.

got a ten month old bullx myself and she is exactly the same mate .just keep plodding away they,l come right . :thumbs-up:
